After withering criticism, the suburban Journal News has shut down a controversial gun permit database that allowed readers to access the names and addresses of gun owners, published shortly after the Newtown school massacre.
Publisher Janet Hasson said in a statement today that the paper wasn't admitting it made a mistake when it made public the personal information of gun permit owners in Westchester and Rockland counties, and that it wasn't caving to critics or death threats it received in the aftermath.
"The database has been public for 27 days and we believe those who wanted to view it have done so already," Hasson said.

The information published by the newspaper is public record — although some critics have said the decision to reveal names and addresses of permit holders amounted to little more than a "data dump."
Hasson said New York's recently-passed gun-control legislation, which allows permit holders to request their personal information be kept confidential, also weighed in the decision.
A snapshot of the map showing the general location of gun permit holders in the two counties remains on the newspaper's website.
The paper tried to get the same information from Putnam County, but officials refused.

The damage has been done.... Thousands of gun owners are at risk and they are still on the hook for making the "map to the guns". If someone broke into my home and there was even a word from the bad guys that they had used this map, the paper and it's staff would be named as accessories, and a civil suit would follow..... Coming off my box now

Don't worry, we'll all be safer once they start issuing/restricting rights on what they think you think. The slippery slope? http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/201...u-too-sick-to-own-a-gun?lite&ocid=msnhp&pos=1

Yeah Woody,

That law is scary. I'm not sure what good it will do. As the article stated the mentally ill are already prohibited from owning firearms. It's a federal law. It's just that reporting was next to nil, with the exception of 7 states! I think that is what the head of the NRA was saying in his first speach on this subject, following the shootings in CT, which he was greatly maligned for. Just enforce the existing laws better and see where we go from there! Coumo just throwing out this knee jerk law is not necessary IMO!

They can't or won't even enforce the laws they have on the books! Folks remember this, this is the same President that wouldn't sign a bill that extended the first ban on assault rifles. Now after this latest shooting he sees the light? All the bills, acts, bans, and political flag waving mean nothing, from J walking to Firearm bans, if you refuse to enforce the laws! In VA alone 44,000 people lied on their permit paperwork....less than 50 were prosecuted!

I feel even safer now. PA is cracking down, they ain't putting up with no BS. Bad boys & bad girls watch out. 5 year old kid called a "terrorist threat", interrogated for 3 hours and suspended because she was going to shoot bubbles from her bubble gun. :smt043 Assault bubble guns soon to be added to the list. WTF is happening here.:smt089 http://abcnews.go.com/US/video/girl-suspended-threatening-shoot-classmate-bubble-gun-18255686

I see some jail time here to... That was a oversized clip, it held more than 7oz.

The unchecked lunacy that is a companion of a society that has so little to really worry about. We are the most successful, educated, and resource laden society in recorded history, our poor have things that kings couldn't even dream of 150 years ago, and yet we have NO connection to reality.

We, as a society, are losing our minds. Literally!
