"No earthworms are native to North America's northern forests (massive ice age glaciers kept the land worm-free). But in the years since settlers arrived, 15 earthworm species have appeared in Minnesota, from Europe and Asia. Some of the invasive speciesare changing local forests, scientists have discovered.

"After these mixers come in, there's a loss in plant species," said Kit Resner, graduate student and soil biogeochemist at the University of Minnesota and lead study author.

The earthworms eat away at the puffy duff layer blanketing the forest floor, where species such as salamanders and ovenbirds live, Resner reported Sunday (Oct. 27) at the Geological Society of America's annual meeting. Duff is fallen organic material, such as leaves, slowly decomposing on the ground."

Wow, with this information I can....... Those are good jobs clearly college educated w/ benefits and retirement packages.
I remember when I read about the Milwaukee Museum doing research on road kill because it had not been done before.
I replied to the article saying it is studied all the time. I aim, I swerve, I hit, Look in the rear view mirror and the raccoon is dead. What more is there to research?
I must have a defect that I do not understand spending on these grants.

After seeing that the government is providing $880k to study snail sex, what "needs" might we want to ask for a grant to study?

How about the affects of boaters having boat sex on nearby marine life? Does it make them horny?

Or the very urgent study of footprints on the beach, are they still sexy when viewed by non humans.

Well, that is a start, I'll ask them to just send the checks to the boat...

We would have to find a neutral party as were all nuts after november 1st untull april15 so it would have to be a wife or gf that cashed the check.Of course we would have to be let out of the loony bin for waxing and polishing but that would be part of the suvey anyway.

That is OK. After November 1st I wear long pants and you would not be able to see the GPS ankle bracelet. The shakes and frothing at the mouth may be a dead give away that the boat is up on stands.
