Last summer we took the 300 south to Whitehall and spent a few days over Labor Day weekend at the birthplace of the US Navy. Looking for ideas this summer... We've done day trips to Plattsburg and into Malletts Bay, but how about ideas for a 5 day itinerary north of Burlington!? Any VT/NY Champlainers on here? Canada?!

Burton Island was nice. we spent 3 days there at their marina. quiet and secluded. I did that about 5 years ago. we didnt venture much further north of that however since our trip started in Kingston NY and we had about 10 days to do it.

Up the Hudson to Albany and then through the locks to Lake Champlain??? That is one of my dream trips!! I wish a bunch of boats and folks could get together to do the trip. I look forward to following this thread.:smt038

I'll second the Burton complemement, we stay there a few weekends a year, even though we live about 2 miles away.

On the NY side, just north of Plattsburg is a beautiful sandy beach in Treadwell Bay. And for mooring you can go to the east end of Treadwell to Deep Bay, or go around Cumberland Head and head a little north to find Treadwell Bay Marina.

That's all the gouge I'm comfortable giving up-for now. If you get the Wx right it is just beautiful, if you don't it could be 50 and raining.

in 1990, my dad and I went from Plattsburgh to 3 Rivers on the St Lawrence.

What a great trip. The Richelieu canal was fun and really an easy experience. Locked a lot on the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh and the Champlain Canal system to Albany, and the R canal to Montreal was the most enjoyable.

Montreal is a great ( as in really great) city to visit and you can choose to go up or down the St L

try for a 10 day trip and hit Montreal, 1000 islands, Oswego and taxi back thru the Erie Canal to Albany and back home and you will have won the boat trip lottery.

I have boated all the Great Lakes (minus Superior), North Channel, the Hudson to NYC, the Ohio River System, and the East Coast from Ft Myers to Washington DC and the Abacos and I easily put Lake Champlain and 1000 islands in the top 5 .

This is my home area. I spend about two weeks total at Burton every year even though I keep my boat less than a mile away :) It's a great place. You can make reservations at Burton so give them a call.

About 15 minutes away from Burton is Butler Island which has a sandy beach. Don't go there when the wind is out of the South though.

The Burton Island area is great, there are a number of islands or the mainland shore where you can find lots of coves and protected areas for anchoring. I'd check out the web site url http://www.vtstateparks.com/htm/reservation.cfm for more info for VT State parks (of which Burton is one of).

John,

We keep our boat in the 1000 islands in Abay. I would love to travel down through Lake Champlain. We went to Montreal a couple of years ago and getting through the locks on the river is quite time consuming. We had to wait for hours to lock through. Do you think 10 days is really enough to do the loop from from abay back through lake ontario?

I like how you think, but ... we need to bring it down under 3' of ice in the bays first.... ;) makes for tough ice chiseling ahead of the bow....

Agreed.. But I caught landlocks off Split Rock in December for the first time this year, so my "off season" has already been shortened! See you on the water (hopefully soon!!)
