Yes, I said it... on a can boat!

Me and a bunch of my lake friends are making this trip the second weekend in April. It's a nice tri-toon though... 30' with an upper deck. Going to make the trip on Friday, stay two nights in Charleston and head back on Sunday.

I'm going to be the captain but I've not made this trip before, so any recommendations are welcome.

Hoping for good weather!

Ok, I will show my ignorance. What's a can boat?

Myrtle to Georgetown is really nice as it is on the Waccamaw River. Georgetown to Charleston is best done during the upper half of the tide.

What is a can boat? Thanks!

A pontoon or in this case a tritoon boat. Similar to this one:

Oh I see it! You're calling a double decker pontoon/tri-toon boat a can boat. Right?

In 36 years of boating I've never heard of a toon boat referred to as a "can boat"! You learn something new everyday!

Cheers

You should have no problem with depth on that boat. It's an easy trip about 110 miles but in a pontoon it will be a long day especially if you run into any weather. Make sure you have a good chart loaded on an Iphone or Ipad. There are many good restaurants plus fuel in Georgetown which is about the half way point. H

Easy trip, protected waters the whole way. The Waccamaw River section is probably the most beautiful section of the ICW. You should be fine. Like Jim says, Georgetown is a great stop over place to eat lunch. The waterfront burned down awhile back, but I'm sure they have rebuilt it. Better call and make sure though.
The ICW thru Georgetown can be tricky. Make sure to bear to starboard in Winyah Bay at the island split. The ICW does a hard turn to STBD between the islands. If you miss the turn and follow the markers, the channel will take you out the Winyah Inlet to the ocean. You will figure out your mistake and turn back.
It should be a fun trip. Enjoy it.

What kind of cruise speed do you run in a 30ft tri toon?

Thanks for the info! Yep, I see that hard right out of Georgetown bay that goes in behind Cat Island.

I believe this boat has a 250 Yamaha 4 stroke... I've drove it before and it does about 30-35 MPH loaded.

They didn't rebuild the buildings that burned but there are still a number of good places to eat. The River Room was not effected by the fire. Also, Buzz's Roost which did burn has relocated further west on Front Street but still on the water. We spent a night on the boat in Georgetown last summer and had a blast.

Is he getting in the water north of the rock pile? If so run at low tide so you can see the sides. Otherwise stay in the middle. It was carved out and if you get wide, you hit the rocks. Low side shows them and it actually helps.

On a pontoon boat with a 2.5 ft draft he won't have a problem in the ditch.

We start out at Cherry Grove, North Myrtle... where is this "rock pile" you speak of?

It will show on your charts, watch for debris in the Waccamaw, lots of rain this past week. Enjoy, sounds like fun. Of course pics are needed

Weather is looking good for this trip this weekend... a little cooler than normal but mostly clear and sunny!
