Hello,

I'm looking for some diagnostic help with my Norcold DE441. It has always cooled very well, but after not using it for 6 months I switched it on (after reset) and it just cycles on and off about every 20 seconds. It appears to be getting a little cooler, but it certainly isn't acting normal. Any ideas will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Still great boating weather here in North Carolina...

Typiclly a cycling on and off compressor is low on freon. You may have a small leak, you may be able to charge it up and see how long it lasts, may last a week, may last a year or more...

Dan - I have a Norcold troubleshooting guide. PM me your email address and I will send it to you if you are interested.

My DE-051 was doing that and not cooling at all. The freon was fine but I was told the compressor cooling fan was bad causing this to happen.

We rebuilt ours inside the boat. You must take the door out to remove it from boat. Cheeper and much eaisier to rebuild.

Thanks for the help/suggestions. I'm really hoping it can be fixed rather than replaced. We have a local guy who works on marine fridges and air conditioning units so I guess I'll call him. If I've learned anything when it comes to "Harry Boat Owner" repairs is that you have to know your limitations.

My Norcold stoped cooling last year and I didn't want to attempt to remove the door to get it out nor spend upwards of $1,000 for a new one. I searched Craigslist and found a new in box cooling unit. It took about 1 1/2 hours for me to pull the fridge, remove the old cooling unit and replace it all inside the cabin. Not a hard job and only cost me $200.

My Norcold just went bad. I found a repair center and they looked at it. It needed a new power supply which was going to be about $380 + $75 in labor to install. A new fridge is about $650 at West Marine so that is the course I have chosen. It just did not make sense to me to spend all that money to fix it when for another couple hundred I could have a new fridge with a 2 year warranty. I am still trying to sell/part out my DE-051 but I doubt that would work with your model.
