Hi,

I have a 1978 26' w/ a single 350 and alpha 1 drive. I am hearing this kind of knocking noise when shifting from neutral into drive. It doesnt happen all the time but mostly when I am pulling out of the dock. It is only in the transition phase and goes away once the boat is in drive. I also dont think it is happening from neutral to reverse only neutral to forward.

Thanks for any help,

Chris

Couple things come to mind, you need to shift faster or maybe your cable is stiff and not moving quick enough. What you describe sounds like the dogs in the drive jumping over each other. You should go in gear with a solid thunk, not knocking noises.

Also check your idle speed (I'm not sure of your specified idle RPM but likely 600-900). If you are idling too high then the shift into forward is rough.
