I have the factory installed Raymarine 215 VHF radio in my 280. After I turn on the VHF and wait for a minute or two a loud beeping goes off and NMEA is flashing on the screen. After that it will sometimes start beeping at different times. I don,t have the manual and was wondering if this is normal or if I can turn off the alarm.

I believe this happens when the DSC radio does not connect with the GPS or NMEA device to show location when sending a distress call.

It's looking for a GPS position over the NMEA 0183 connection. Since it does not receive it, it flashes the warning. Eigcpa is correct. It just was never connected at the factory.

the nema waring cannot be shut off it's law and will go off every 2 min. to fix just hook up the gps to the vhf radio.

To add to what eigcpa wrote...

After the first alarm (after about 1 minute), it will alarm every 4 hours if it is not hooked up to your GPS.
