I have a question ands this example will probably be best (I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE NMEA 2000 BACKBONE) lets say you have three "T" on your backbone mounted behind you helm station console.

One "T" goes the chart plotter, One goes to the VHF radio, but the 15 foot cable running from your outboard will not reach. So my question is this?

Can one obtain a 2 meter NMEA 2000 cable and connect it to the 15 foot NMEA 2000 cable coming form the outboard making about a 22 foot cable and then connect this to the NMEA 2000 backbone "T?"

Thanks

http://www.maretron.com/products/cabling.php Yes - you can use either a backbone or drop cable; just make sure gender and connector size is correct . Max length is 200 meters. Each mechanical connection constitutes a loss so one would want to minimize intermediate connections as best as possible; but in your example no issues.

Max drop cable length should be 6m (18') or less and not 200m...

So just extend your backbone cable to the engine and move 1 of your T's there with the terminator in it and connect it up to the engine IF.

You can pull it from the T and probably not have any issues - but why break the standard :) when it is just as easy to extend the backbone as it is to pull a cable from a T from the same place? There is ZERO difference in the work load. NMEA 2000 backbones cables are the same as non backbones (unless you use MINI and not Micro cables - but very few do) - the only difference is how they are connected...

Yes for drop cables 20 feet but for lengths on trunk (backbone) between devices is 200m; there are other factors to consider. See this guide.
