I am trying to connect my Lowrance HDS7 G1 to my Standard Horizon Quest GX1255S VHF Radio via NMEA 0183. The goal is to send coordinate data from the GPS to the VHF so I can set the MMSI up.

Lowrance Side-

Green RX (-)
Orange RX (+)
Shield (Ground)
Yellow TX (+)
Blue TX (-)

Standard Horizon VHF Side-

Blue (+) NMEA Input
Green NMEA Ground

How to I go about connecting the two sides to get data to flow? Blue-Blue and Ground-Ground? Seems to be an inconsistency between the available wires. Any help is appreciated!

Jason

Blue to Blue - Ground to Ground should work.

You want the TX or OUTPUT from the GPS to the RX or INPUT on the Radio - The plotter may have 2 channels of NEMA 0183, ensure you are using the lower speed of the two incase you add an AIS in the future that will need the high speed line.

Thanks for the reply! I ended up getting it working using the below configuration-

HDS-------- VHF

YELLOW-----BLUE
BLUE-------GREEN

I am now getting Coordinates on the VHF

When I hooked up my G-740 to the SH 2150 this is what they told me and sent to Todd, don't know if this will help you or not.

Garmin's tech support got back to me. Here is their recommendation after I sent them a tech support email on Friday.

Garmin's reply
Dear Todd ,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Happy to help.

Based on the GX2150 Manual, it appears that your wire connections should be as follows:

Radio -----> GPS
Blue -----> Blue
Grey -----> Brown
Green -----> Black
Brown -----> Black
Yellow (AIS Out +) -----> Violet
White (AIS Out -) -----> Black

Port 1 of the Chartplotter should be set to NMEA Standard and Port 2 of the Chartplotter should be set to NMEA High Speed. Consult page 86 of the following manual on how to do this:

Please let me know if you have other questions and I'll be glad to assist.

With Best Regards,
Dathan
