twin 150hp Volvos on DP legs
Well after spending 2 lots of 10 days on Annie we decided it's just not big enough for our family of four.
We have signed a contract pending sea trials and surveys which start on Saturday. The launch is a New Zealand made 1997 Genesis 320 euro, 32ft, twin Volvo 150 hp duo prop diesels @600 hrs. It isn't a Sea Ray but it looks like an old one! We are very excited and it will be a big step up for us. We still have Annie at this stage and hope the sale process isn't to painful.
I'll let you know how things pan out.

Good luck with the process and the new boat, Mike.

Looks good.....you will be in the elite "diesel" club now.

Yep good luck... we are going to need some info on it and pictures as others have stated... congrats...

Nice craft...does look like an older SR...with lots of windows

Nice one Mike, I'll be jealous of your fuel economy

Very nice and congrats. I'm amazed how much less HP is needed on a diesel boat. You would need double that for gas in that size boat. What would the fuel burn be like with twin 150HP Volvo diesels?

My guess would be somewhere between 30 and 35 litres (8-10 US Gallons) an hour at cruise speed...much less at hull speed. And diesel is cheap(er) than gas in New Zealand with no road tax.

Way to go Annie. Make sure the survey is good. Check those bulkheads for delamination or indications of too much punching into heavy seas. Get a good engine survey and make sure both plants are running within operating temp during cruise. At 600 hours I'd have the exhausts pulled at the elbow and check for condition of the turbos and any evidence of sea water intrusion. I assume they are KAD 32P-A's? If all is good you guys will have a fabulous time on that boat and I envy you.
As others have said...PICTURES!!!!!:smt038

Good Luck

Terry

Well I'm back,

Thanks for the well wishes. Pretty busy day and a bit with 9 hours of driving a car, about 3 hours of nervous sleep, 25 minutes of sea trial followed by about 1 hr onboard scratching my head wondering what to do!
I haven't been on a twin install in 15 years and we found it rather noisy and harsh compared to a Chev V6/V8.
The engines are
AQAD 31P Duo props so not as nice as the KAD'S Terry :(
We had 6 adults onboard and I must say it was slow to plane fully loaded until the turbo's spooled up and then it was all action (I see why they supercharged them)!..... 28 Knots at 3800rpm and 21 knots at 3100rpm.
I managed to find a couple of sweet spots for low noise but the admiral wasn't that impressed with the DB levels.
I was told the fuel usage would be around 16ltrs/hr each at a slow plane but cant confirm or deny so you are on the money at 32 Terry!
We were disappointed with the bed widths and lengths, I'm 6'2". Wifey said "How the h+ll can a 32ft boat have such small beds"? and i tend to agree....If your going to go to all the trouble of designing a bed the least you can do is make it big enough to sleep in?
The fridge and freezer boxes are massive and run off the port engine compressor only (no ac/dc). Im not familiar with these and was asking how long they stay cold between runs. It formed ice in both after the 25 min run and was still there after 4 hrs sitting empty so maybe they are good? I made the mistake of washing my hands and then checking the freezer box during my final nosey (there is some of my skin in that freezer).
The hot water cylinder is only heated via the stbd eng and not electrically so thats a bummer when in the marina.
From what I could see of the shore-power system it runs a battery charger and a couple of outlets and thats all.
It has 4x 6 volt house batteries and 2 of these are not healthy so the lectrasan toilet wasn't working.
Anyway I started off taking some pics before the broker turned up and then got sidetracked so I apologize for the lack of detail.
We told the broker we were disappointed and were going to revisit our offer which was welcomed. The owners have had this for 2 years now... He crashed into something on his first outing and hasn't used it much since. It has spent more time on the hard than wet according to the locals.
We have 2 days to decide whether to proceed or not.
I'm starting to rant so I'll go get some sleep... Feel free to voice, it would be much appreciated.

Hey Mike,

Did not see you post this originally. Am available for a sounding session sunday if you want to run a few ideas around. You have my cell in a recent PM, call if i can help.

Hi Mike,

Sorry to hear the boat didn't impress upon actually visiting it. From the photo's it looks tidy and of course batteries can easily be replaced and minor things can be fixed. But, issues such as bed size and engine noise are something you have to live with unless you want to do a complete refit (and that would not be good use of money unless you intended holding the boat for a long time). I'd be pretty dissapointed if I was moving up in boat size only to discover the bed didn't get bigger but I got good size freezer boxes instead!!

I suppose it depends on how you are going to use your boat but there does seem to be a few things to ponder. The Letrasan toilet seems to be an overly complicated system, and shore power should power your microwave, fridge, TV and hot water..as well as charge the batteries and run a few outlets.

I'd also investigate the 'crash' a little more and find out why the boat has been on the hard for so long? Are the two related in some way?

If she was a little slow to shoot the hole with six on board, consider what she might be like with six plus overnight gear and toys plus full fuel and water. The vessel may be a bit overpropped perhaps, although the speeds and rpms look pretty typical.

Anyway, sometimes after a long day things seem a little dissapointing but if you are still making an offer, albeit a smaller one, then you still have some skin in the game, or in your case, in the the freezer:grin:.

If you get over first impressions, and decide to go for survey, then this will be the real teller. Let us know how you get on and good luck.

Terry

Hi Guys,

Well after a good nights sleep things seem a little better. I've worked out some worst case pricing to fix the immediate issues which is roughly 5k which includes new sound deadening, batteries, complete waste tank replacement if necessary and a couple of hours of tuition from a contortionist......
The bed problem can be fixed by adding an infill to return the rear berth bed back to a rectangle shape instead of an "L". It will look ugly but i don't sleep with my eyes open. I think its silly when the look of something impacts on its usefulness!
The boat has a huge battery capacity for the house which is mainly there for the Letrasan tank. If I do away with this I could half the batteries which would save $800. Still undecided as I have heard they are complicated but good? I'll do some googling and see what surfaces, LOL.
I got these interior photos off the web, It's not as flash as a SeaRay but neither is the price.
Thanks for the thoughts Terry, I think the crash was a big nudge to someone else's pride and joy in the marina. He had helm indicator fitted afterwards and the broker tells me he has no idea on controlling twins, mind you the broker did a crap job on reversing in also! I won't say any more as it's going to be a steep learning curve for me also.
This is a cheap boat otherwise I would shop around, I remember thinking the same when I bought Annie which was a mess and she turned out ok.
I'll give you a call Steve and we can talk about harmonics and earplugs.
So at this stage we are going to proceed minus 5k and see what happens if he accepts we will continue.....TBC

Good on you Mike. That looks a nice boat inside with heaps of room by comparison to your current charge. It may not be everything you want but as you say, the price reflects that. Glad the 'crash' was none too serious.

There are some good 'wavebar' products out there that are real good at deadening sound but unfortuantely the best ones are heavy (they have a lead component to them). Still depending on what you have at the moment, anything might be much better than next to nothing! Full steam ahead and good luck mate.

Well it took a while but we got there! Had a major battle over batteries. He was only prepared to replace 2 of the 4! I wasn't, so getting 4 :)
Very clean survey.... 3 other minor issues, broken hinge on storage locker, A blanked skin fitting that needs a sea-cock and the toilet not working. We signed the final offer this afternoon which was accepted and we take possession on friday. I hope the weather is good so we can take our first cruise. Thanks to Barlow for the chat and the thoughts terry. I have a heap of work to do but with a winter on the way it gives me time to get Seahorse how we want it. Hope I'm still allowed to be part of Club Sea Ray? It is the best boating forum by far!

I vote to keep ya as long as the photos continue...lol. Congrats and am very happy for you.. good luck and keep us posted here...

Well it took a while but we got there in the end. The owner accepted our offer less the findings on the sea trial. We got the keys on Friday and moved all our stuff from Annie to Seahorse. Love having so much space and no more slowing down for other boat wakes! he he. My parents were out in their boat and took some photos so thought I'd share.
The good news is that we sold Annie on the Sunday morning to a lovely couple in Blenheim. No doubt I will get to see her around the sounds which will be nice. I'm back up to fix the lectra san this weekend coming and to show the new owners of Annie the ropes.

Congratulations, it seems you made the perfect deal! Quite difficult to sell and buy so quickly in today's market!

Thanks Pietro, Yes I feel quite lucky to have pulled this one off. The new owner appreciated the amount of work that I had put into Annie. I didn't get any reward for my efforts but to break even is a bonus.
