new to the forum chance to buy a boat

I have a chance to buy a 2004 240 sundeck. relatively clean, but the lower end has been fractured off when the owner hit something in the water.
the boat is really inexpensive , is this a foolhardy task to replace the lower end. Am I tackling a money pit?

Lower unit all of it or just the bottom half?Sei sells them not bad on pricing,but you need to pull the whole thing and inspect the other parts behind it like bearings gimbal and the transom if he hit that hard.A good time to replace the boots also.

There could be a number of other issues caused by that strike. Make sure you check everything.

Take it to your mechanic. Get an estimate/opinions. Take that cost off the asking price. That is only your step 1 in this process. Pre-purchase survey and sea trial are mandatory for step 2. Then negotiate a little. Then, when you can sleep restfully at night, with no looming financial fears or potenial buyers remorse...wait for the sun, pack some sandwiches, and get out on the lake for some fun!

As others have already said, if it's just the lower unit you are not talking too much in terms of cost of boat. If you start seeing the bottom and fiberglass work, that's where things can add up very quickly. a complete alpha replacement drive is only approx 1500. I think sea trialling this one is a bit optimistic.
