Morning, I'm the proud owner (as of yesterday) of a beautiful 340. My family and I had our maiden voyage last night and I love the boat. We moved up a bit from a Formula 310SS. First thing I noticed was just how much bigger this boat is! The weight the beam it's all so much more then the 310. Really appreciate it in big wake.

i have a few quick questions that I need some help with:

1. I think my port fuel gage on the dash, as well as my smart gage are not working. They both read a quarter tank but when I tried to fill up I couldn't get any more fuel in the tank. Starboard side was ok and they both read full. Can I move fuel between the two tanks or are they separate?

2. We anchored last night and I realized that there is no depth counter for the windlass. I'm not sure how much chain I have or rope. How do you know how much you are letting out without a counter?

3. It looks like I may have a leak in my starboard rudder shaft. I noticed it was wet in that area and I'm pumping water out - 1 to 2 times an hour. Would this be a seal? Any idea as to what the cost should be to replace it?

Thank you in advance for the help.

Congrats on the new boat and welcome to CSR. I should tell you that we have a longstanding rule on here--if it doesn't come with photos it didn't happen. We'll let you skate by without pics on this first visit to CSR, but we all like to see each others' boats, the waters you boat on and the family and friends.

I can't help you with Questions 1 & 3 above, but I might be able to help you on the anchor rode question. If you have chain in your rode followed by rope, that's the easy part. Just measure the chain so you'll know how much you have out. Then mark the rope part of it with the little colored tags that you slip through the rope.

If you have all chain, like I do, here's what I did. I spray painted a white section about 5' long a few feet above the anchor. That way when the white section is coming through the windlass I know it's time to slow down and ease the rest of the chain and anchor into the pulpit. Above that, I painted a red/white section (about a foot of each color) every 25' for the next 100'. At 100' I painted a white/red/white section so I know I had let out 100'. Then I repeated that sequence for the next 100'. When I am getting to the end of my chain (I have 265') I painted a 5' white section again so I know it's time to stop letting out chain

Best solution for length of anchor rode is the one suggested above, pull the rode out and mark it in some manner.

I never did that when we had our 340 - I used the method below.

Our 340 had 25 ft of chain, then when to all line. I had counted how long it took (with out stopping the switch) to get the 25ft of chain out.

I used whatever that number of seconds were to gauge 25ft segments. Certainly not precise. But did give me an idea of amount out. Yes, the line might not feed exactly as precise as the chain, but within a margin of error I felt it was close enough. My concern was never putting out too much rode, rather making sure I had enough out.

Just a rough guess method,

Mark

Welcome aboard and enjoy! Good choice!

Welcome aboard - I am in Vancouver downtown so do not hesitate to PM me if there is anything I can help with. Like you I was used to a rode counter, I did what the others suggested and pulled the chain put onto the dockside and spray
Winged it at 5 ft then every 25 ft.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I'm getting the marina to look at the leak on Tuesday, I measured out my chain and marked it - rope was a pain - but that's my fault for bringing a white marker...

as for #3 stopping the leak is easy...getting to the rudder is the hard part....look at post #1651 in this thread to see if it helps any....
