Boat Info
1978 SRV 240
Named, "This Old Boat"
Engines
260 Mercruiser w/Pre-Alpha Drive
My wife and I bought this boat a 4 years ago. The previous owner did much of the work to restore "This Old Boat". Interior still needs updating from the original. Most of our boating is done on Lake Champlain, NY. Experienced shifting problem this summer - staying in forward gear sometimes when shifting back to neutral. Adjusted the shift cable 2 years ago and worked fine until this summer. Any help would be much appreciated.

Joe,

If you are still running the original shift cable it is probably streched to it's limit and needs a replacement. I is important when replacing to know what drive you have. The original MR-1 "pre-Alpha-1" drives use a different cable from the Alpha drives. There is a good chance that you have the original because the original drives were very strong and durable. Check the serial no. of the drive with your local MerCruiser dealer or get the toll free number from MerCruiser's web site to determine which cable you need.

Be fore-warned...if you are not real handy this cable replacement can be a tough job...one that might best be left to a Certified Merc mechanic.

Nice looking '78 by the way.

we had a teak boat in hong kong years ago - every year we would have to lightly sand - and re-oil --with danish teak oil -- assume elbow grease is the only idea ? good luck.

There is a thread somewhere on the forum here, I think it is in general discussions, that lots of people chimed in on what they did with there teak. The majority it seemed did not like to fool with the upkeep and either replaced it with non wood products or sanded and varnished. My brother and I prefer to keep it oiled. One of the things we love about the old boats is the natural teak. I forget what I am currently using but it is an old bottle or two that came with the 1982 Cuddy when I bought it. They have a teak cleaner too and I have an old bottle of that. Just brightens it a bit every once in a while when needed, I have never had to do it yet on the cuddy. Just oil it a couple times a year and just do different pieces as needed. The teak in the cabin does not need it that often and the slip is covered and they are out of the sun most of the time. Our 78 240 has the sikkins on it and we do not care for it that much, that or the varnish. Personal preference in a lot of ways.

Maddenj,

Nice looking 240! Try using Sikkens. so far, i like this the best. my first year i did the sanding/sealer/teak oil - looke good for a couple of weeks. next year i used something else - can't remember. was ok. this spring I used Sikkens - wow! still looks good at the end of the year. the prep is a bit of work, but the finish is easy to maintain, and durable.

Great looking boat! I'm with the Sikkins Cetol group as far as teak care goes. Cleaning and oiling looks great, but just doesn't last. As far as your shift issue, you might also want to look in to the shift-assist kit that Merc made for the engines of the era. They are still available.
