I want to install a new Raymarine Chirp through hull transducer. The original transducer whole is bigger that the raymarine. What should i do?

1. Leave the original one in place and drill a new hole for the new one

2. Fill in the original transducer hole with marine tex (or something similar) and redrill the smaller hole through that?

I see nothing on the net that can help me answer this. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'd go with number 1 below.

#1 sounds like the safest bet.

#2 sounds like a good way to sink the boat.

I had the same problem and had the local boat fiberglass folks repair mine. They sanded the hull on both sides to make the repair look like a dumbbell. Now, I need that hole back for a chirp transducer. So, I vote for leaving what you have in place and making another hole in the boat.

Take a look at the AIRMAR site or call them. They make most of the transducers in use today. This isn't the first situation like this so my but is they either have a fitting allow the smaller stem transducer or they have a fully compatible transducer with the proper stem diameter.

Another thought is to talk to Jim Maier, who owns this site, and is both a Raymarine and an AIRMAR dealer. He may have a ready solution for you.

Be very careful leaving 2 functioning transducers in the boat. It is very easy for one to interfere with the other if they operate on similar frequencies.

I'm with Frank. Talk to Airmar. They are very helpful and I would be surprised if they didn't have some sort of reducer sleeve or other compatible soultion. You likely have the P17 thru-hull chasis now - but with the model number of your current transducer, Airmar should be able to offer the solution. The model number of your current transducer should be on a label a few inches up the wire harness from the transducer body.

Another option is to re glass the hole then start over with the proper size hole.
