New Fire Extinguisher Regs

They never give up. Why buy a rechargeable if it goes to the landfill in 12 years? If a boat has the legal extinguisher do all the still functioning but not labeled "marine" have to be deep sixed?

So, my 12yr old built in fire suppression system in my Engine Room no longer meets CG Regs, even though i get it inspected annually.
Instead, I will buy the appropriate number of handhelds (+1 more) even though it is no where near as effective.
Brilliant.

I'm not sure this applies to fixed fire suppression systems.

I still don't have a thorough understanding of this, just posting clauses as I come across them. This clause looks like it has you covered either way.

Here's the link if you want to read through the requirements:

§ 175.380
Condition and number of fire extinguishers required for recreational vessels built model year 2017 or earlier.
Recreational vessels with a model year between 1953 and 2017 must meet the following requirements:

(a) Previously installed extinguishers with extinguishing capacities that are less than what is required in table 1 to § 175.320(a)(1) or table 2 to § 175.320(b)(1) need not be replaced but must be maintained in good condition.

(b) All extinguishers installed after August 22, 2016, must meet the applicable requirements in §§ 175.305 through 175.320.

Thank you @jmauld !

I should have opened the link to the actual regs

I. Standard for Fixed Extinguishing Systems

One commenter expressed concern that the proposal would eliminate a standard for maintaining fixed fire extinguishing systems on recreational vessels. NFPA 10 applies only to portable fire extinguishers. The removal of NFPA 10's application to recreational vessels through this final rule will neither impose nor remove maintenance standards for fixed fire extinguishing systems.

I read through the regulations that were linked and I didn't see any reference to the stated "This product must be removed from service within 12 years after date of manufacturing" as stated FAQs. In fact, I didn't see any reference to the age of the fire equipment at all.

Can someone point me to that?
