I need to replace my anchor rope. I will re-use the chain.

Per a phone call to Imra, the USA representatives for my Lofrans windlass, I need a ½” three strand line.

Here is my question. Are the $1 per foot NEW ENGLAND three strand ROPES from West Marine any better quality or exactly the same as $.50 per foot NEW ENGLAND three strand ROPES from cyber-bridge-marine.com?

What anchor line brand do you recommend and where should I get it?

Again, I need a ½” three strand line.

I added 50ft of chain, much easier. river marine supply in miami was the cheapest when I did it last year. Best thing I ever did. Line fray's and is tougher to feed thru w/lass. I think I paid 1.67/ft. 1/4" bbb. Or you can turn your line around and make a new splice to get a few more years. good luck RF

.......... good luck RF

I agree that chain is better, goes thru the windlass and holds better.

If I go all chain then I’d need to get all new chain because as far as I know you can’t splice chain if it’s going to go thru a windlass.

Yup, I asked the Imtra CS guy the specific question last year. The LoFrans gypsy is too finicky for a chain splice.

Did you see what price imtra would give you?

My chain splice worked fine. The link is the exact same size as the rest. I don't have a Lofrans.
Went out Sunday and in 15 ft of water dropped 62' of chain and it held 6 boats. 3 were 30+. I would bite the bullet and buy the chain.

I was told by a West Marine person that they (WM) bought out New England Ropes or that West has a very strong relationship with NE Ropes.

Where did you get it for 1.67 / ft?

I am going to go to all chain.

I have a chain question and posted it here

http://clubsearay.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31251

Sorry for this bouncing between two threads.

In brief, the specific windlass that I have needs a specific chain that would make going all chain cost above what I am willing to spend.

I am back to looking at getting a New England ½” three strand rope, splicing it to the existing chain and replacing this every few years.

The cost of using the rope the manufacturers USA rep said I need to use is about 1/10th the cost of the chain they are telling me I need to use.

FWIW, I like having a rope / chain combo. When the boat is working on the anchor the rope will stretch and act like a shock absorber. With all chain, there is a pretty big jerk felt when the boat swings. Those jerks get old and uncomfortable really quick.

I've heard a number of times that 8-plait can be a good choice for finicky windlasses.
I realize that your manuf. (and every other one I know) specifies 3-strand, but if the 3-strand is causing frustration you might give it a try. Maybe buy just 50 feet or so and see how the windlass handles it. You can always make a couple of dock lines out of it...

I am interested.

How would I connect it to the chain?

That's right, with chain you have to add a rope harness with a hook to act as a snubber. Once the anchor is set you hook the snubber line to the chain outside of the chute, then cleat the snubber line off and let out the chain until it goes slack between the hook and the windlass. This will take the strain off the the gypsy as well as reduce the banging.

Does everyone with a all chain rode do this?

If so, I may as well scrap the all chain idea and just replace the rope.

I have a rope/chain, but have 50' of chain. There are many times when I don't have the entire 50' out. In those cases, I do as Henry stated, too.

Re: NEW ENGLAND ROPES / Anchor Lines or other brand? What anchor line do you recommen

Doug,

Using the snubber line is not that different from how you are supposed to use a rope & chain rode on a windlass. The correct way of using the rope chain rode is to set the anchor and then cleat the line off (the center cleat on our 280s) and then take the load off the windlass.

BTW, I tracked down that on line store River Marine in Miami that was listed in your companion thread. They are advertising 1/4" G53 at about $ 1.50 ft. Of course the price is shown for lengths up to 12 feet, so I don't know if you went to 75 of 100' what the price would be.

I had about 275' of all chain on my 330, didn't use a snubber and never had a problem. Only one time did I get any banging and that was when I was anchored in about 8' of water and the wind was blowing like he!!.

The snubber is designed to take the shock out of an all chain rode. If you're anchored in deep water and have 100' or more of chain out it will act as its own snubber. When the boat pulls on the chain it will have to lift the weight of the chain off the bottom. That is enough to take the shock out of the rode.
