135 Mercury O/B
Hi all, new here, new to boating, my dad gave me a 18' 1988 Searay Seville with a 135 Mercury OB, I'm told it was some kind of special edition, as the motor is all white...Anyhow, it sat for about 5 years and I just spent $2k at a local shop having the motor gone through, rebuild the carbs, new water pump, new spark boxes, new ignition "trigger" under the flywheel?, tuneup, flush the fuel system etc...It starts and idles great, if you rev it in neutral it revs right to 5K rpm's quickly with no hesitation or anything, however when you put it in forward, it wont pull past 2800 rpm's or so.
Whats odd is if you turn the steering wheel fully left or right, it will start to pick up speed and the rpms will go up when at full turn, but then feels like it jumps into neutral and revs past 5k ....Any ideas before I bring it back to to shop? I like to have some kind of idea what could be wrong, and even fix it myself if possible, I'm a professional fleet mechanic so I know cars and trucks but boats are foreign to me....I'm wondering if the control box/cables could cause this, as the control lever is really worn and sloppy...

Thanks,
Ryan

I believe that is a mercury motor under that white hood. You might want to try finding a shop manual for it.

I'm thinking the carb rebuild wasn't done correctly. although if it's jumping out of gear you shift linkage may need adjustment. I'd bring it back to your repair guy for testing.
