I currently have a 6000# Polylift for my 240SD. I'm considering moving up to a 280DA and will need a new lift. I paid about $5,200 for the lift new two years ago. I just received back an e-mail from a Polylift sales guy offering me $4,200 for my lift as a trade and charging $12,210 for a new 12000# lift for a net cost of $8,010. Geez! Any comments or suggestions?

Brent,

I cannot comment regarding the price as I have never priced out a 12,000 lb. lift. You may want to see what the local hyrdrohoist dealer is willing to offer. My boat was kept on a hyrdohoist for a number of years and I would not have it any other way for a bowrider.

For a 280 you may want to consider it leaving it in the water. However, if you are a clean freak it's tough to beat a lift. Also consider the fact that you will never incur the costs of having the bottom repainted, assuming you buy a 280 w/o bottom paint, significantly reduced outdrive maintenance, and a boat kept on a lift should command a slightly higher price when it comes time to sell. A couple of other questions you want to explore are how many boats are kept on a lift vs. wet slipped (in your area), how hard/easy would it be to sell this lift if you jump up to a 340, and finally does the lift mfg. offer a 12,000 lift that could be easily upgraded, by adding tanks, to say 16,000 lbs?

Good Luck  .

hello

I have been looking for lift also and the local hydrohoist people have said there 8800# lift will do the job fine on a 280 and the cost I believe was around $9000 installed. I feel you pain on a used lift just sold mine a year ago and they were not kind to me. good luck toddoo

Tod,

Quite frankly I'd be surprised if an 8,800 lb. lift would would work on a 280. I would suggest calling engineering/customer service at Hyrdrohoist. They were very helpful when I upgraded my old lift for my 230.

Also, try looking for a used lift.

You know I've thought about, what if I paint the bottom, but I was concerned about the outdrives. But as for the cost of painting the bottom, I figured if it cost around 2k to paint every two years it would take 12 years to cost as much as this new lift, but I guess I wouldn't have anything to sell in 12 years if I painted.

Is a 12,000# lift necessary or would a 10,000# be sufficient?

Well, it really depends on how long you are planning on keeping the boat. If it's 2-3 years, a lift probably wouldn't be practical. On the other hand if you are keeping it 12 years, it would certainly be worth it in my opinion. A 12 yr. old. 280 that's been wet slipped under a covered slip will still be in good condition and will have probably gone through an outdrive by then, while yours will be pristine from top to bottom.

I would say a 10,000 lb. lift would be marginal at best, but call the mfg. The advertised dry weight of my boat was 3,800 lbs. My 4,000 lb. lift worked fine for my previous boat, but not this time around. I had to add a tank thereby increasing the lift's capacity to 6,000 lbs.

I just sold a used 8000 lb lift with my 260. They don't hold there value all that well - granted I really wanted to sell mine. Bottom Paint at the Lake will last more than 2 years if you are using the boat regularly. My Dad's 290 Amberjack is an 02. When they pulled it this fall - they inspected the bottom paint and told him it was still good. In our area people get 4 to 5 years out of bottom paint. Also if you change your anodes out annually with Magnesium Anodes - your drive should be fine. His drives have held up very well. My 260 sat on a lift - But a lift is also a pain. Every weekend - I found myself cleaning the bottom of the boat. Which ends up taking a lot more time to pack up the boat and get home - especially when it is 90 plus degrees. Sometimes it is nice to just dry off the boat and cover it and leave. I am so excited about that fact with the 320 that I won't be cleaning the bottom of the boat anymore.

My Comment as I have now considered a new 240DA recently to realizing I'm better off in a used 260DA that all of the things needed to change boats require $$$$$$$
It's like a sadistic Mastercard Commercial
:smt021 new tow rig $30+K
:smt100 new bigger trailer $6-7K
:smt089 canvas for the one I'm considering $2500.00
:smt014 slightly higher storage fees $25-30 increase/mo
:smt017 increased fuel consumption Who knows :smt013

oh I forgot the actual boat :smt009

Newer, bigger boat to fit the family........priceless

Well said Todd! That is exactly what happens. "Honey, I think that we should move up to a larger boat for the baby and us, it will only be about $50 more a month in payment." Wrong! I don't know if I can use that line like I did the first time.

Yeah the longer they get the exponential increase of payment per item goes..... Somehow I'm still trying to do it.
