I got my boat all cleaned and discovered my batteries are dead. I am relatively inexperienced when it comes to marine batteries... I read some information on the differences and I believe I need a deep cycle battery, but I am not real clear how I determine what size I need?? Can anyone give me a helpful nudge in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

Yes. Use at least one group 27, deep cycle - don't let a retailer talk you into a "dual purpose" (starting/deep cycle). It will give you a little longer usage time (group 27 compared to the smaller group 24). You can go bigger still, but you need to look at the specs to see if it is worth it for the money.

Buy a good brand name, make sure it is "marine". Sometimes the word "marine" just = $$$. But in this case, it means the plates are bigger and will withstand vibration better.

Are these the original batteries?

FYI, it is fine to start an engine on the deep cycle.

Not sure if these are the original batteries or not. I bought the boat in '06 so I am not certain how long before that the batteries were installed. Thanks

My trays in my 260 - held Group 29's. Which had a bit more capacity than the standard Group 27's for anchoring out. Which was nice. I switched back to 27's and was disappointed in their capacity compared to the 29's.

Reason I asked is maybe they just need a good charge. Look for a date stamp/punchout on the top. Otherwise, look for a code stamped/burned into the casing somewhere. I'm sure someone here can translate the code for you - I can't remember well enough to say accurately. If you called the manufacturer, I'm sure they could tell you.

Be sure to measure the tray and take the measurements when you go battery shopping. It'd suck to lug that 50lb thing all the way down to the boat to find it don't fit!
