I am replacing the 2 8d main batteries tomorrow. Having bought the boat recently I have quickly found that the house (port) battery was no good and would only last about an hour while at anchor. I'm replacing the lead acid batteries with AGM. This will give me 245 amp hours. and I hope last longer while at anchor.

Is one 8d AGM sufficient for a house bank on a boat this size?

I am considering adding a third 8d in parallel on the port side (house) bank doubling my capacity. Has anyone done this? Thoughts?

I have 2 new agm's for a season of a lot of anchoring out, and don't feel a need for more. I use my genset as needed as it needs to run to keep in good shape anyway!
 
Adding the weight and overhead of another 8D AGM isn't a very good trade off since you have a generator. It is easy to monitor battery condition, so just fire up the generator when you want to recharge the batteries.

Besides, if you have women on your boat you are going to be running the generator anyway for the microwave, the hair tools, the refrigerator, the TV etc.
 
And who wants to carry/maintain another beast like that. Our group 31's are enough to manhandle once every 5 years let alone D's!

I agree with Frank that you should probably stick to one 8D per side unless you are contemplating an inverter setup.

If you are going to the expense of dual 8D AGM batteries, maybe you should check that your converter is up to the task. You probably have a Promatic 50-3. Why not check out the ProNautic 1250? ProMariner can give you the details and attractive pricing since you are a Sea Ray owner.

Installed the 2 new 8d AGM's yesterday. That was sure a chore getting the batteries in and out of the engine room. I'm on the boat this evening but am in a guest slip plugged in so haven't really had a chance to see how long they last while not plugged in.

I think I'm covered when it comes to my converter/charger. The previous owner recently installed at ProMariner ProTech-4 1240.

I'm still worried that one battery (245 amp hours) isn't enough for extend time on the hook. I'm hoping to get 8 to 10 hours while anchored and not running the genset. We are running galley refer, cockpit refer, lights as needed, heads, water pump, etc... I will be on the hook over Halloween weekend so that will be the big test.
