I just fleeted up from a 300 Sundancer and bought a 2008 340 DA. We haven't used the shower, but noted that bathroom sump pump reservoir has ~1" water in it all the time. My 300 Sundancer was dry unless shower was used. Is this normal? I also noted that when I run sump pump manually and all the water is drained out, that ~1" water returns from pump backflow. This doesn't seem normal to me--any thoughts from experienced 340 owners??

There's always going to be some amount of standing water in a sump that's emptied by a bilge pump. I have no idea how the sump in your 300 was able to be completely emptied.

The pump backflow is normal, but it can be a problem (like on my boat) where the hose run is long enough to contain a lot of water. If bad enough, it can cause the pump to cycle continuously. If the backflow is bothersome to you, install a check-valve inline and it'll solve the problem.

Congrats on the new ride.

Your sump should already have a check valve installed to keep it from back flowing. On mine, its installed on the pumps outlet hose just outside of the sump box. The valve is not like a whale valve, which is a rubber flapper, but is more like a (I'm having a hard time of describing what it looks like) rubber As*hole :smt043

Try toweling the sump dry & see it remains so. Ours does.

FYI...the AC condensation drains to the shower sump box & is pumped overboard along with your shower & head sink drainage. If you notice brown water in the sump box or brown stain on the hull at the exit, port side aft of the galley sink drain, check your AC condensation drain pan for rust. In '05 the pans were painted & failed/rusted prematurely. SR replaced ours in '08 with a stainless pan & the discharge no longer stains our hull.

Thanx much for GREAT advice. I'll look for check-valve to ensure it is still good/working. Will likely also have Marina review as boat is still under warranty. Great thoughts on A/C pan as well--Thanx!!

The check valve on these boxes are called diaphram valves and they dont work well. They seem to leak back, very slowly. I have changed mine to a simple check valve, no more back flow.

I suffer from the "rusty pan" stains as do my two dockmates with '06 340's. So I asked my dealer about the stainless steel pan replacement...here was "the answer":

I had to do some research on this. It’s the first time I have heard of it. I spoke to several different people at the plant and no one seems to know anything about this. I can tell you if you know someone that has had it replaced at no charge it would have been directly through the manufacturer. You may want to contact Cruise Air, which is Taylor Marine. They might have a recall on these pans and could possibly send one to you at no charge. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

All--
Thanks for the advice. I just changed check valve and problem solved. The old check valve had swollen and had a hole in it. Regarding the A/C pan, I talked to our dealer/MX and they highlighted that all newer 340s have a Stainless Pan, but they are still painted white. All fixed--thanx:smt038

Not to change the subject, but tell me about those speaker inserts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would they work with JL Audio 7.7" speakers? http://signature.crutchfield.com/s_136M770CG/JL-Audio-M770-CCX.html?tp=3384

I'm not familiar with check valves as mine doesn't have one. Maybe you can disable it when winterizing? If not, be sure that becomes part of your winterization process. You need to be certain some antifreeze flows overboard so that the liquid stuck in the discharge hose doesn't freeze. The last thing I do after running antifreeze throughout the fresh water system (including the shower) is open the sump, clean and rinse it out and pour enough antifreeze directly into it that it can send some up the hose and overboard.

It's normal and I dont know why you would worry about it. I clean mine out once a season if we dont use the shower and once a month if we do.
Its just a box with a small bilge pump really ..

I replaced the check valve and bathroom sump is working great now. Also, I asked SR Dealer Mx and they highlighted that on newer 340 DAs, Sea Ray went to all stainless AC pans, but that they're still painted white. Hopefully this will solve streak problem

Thanx again for all your help!
