We've graduated from the Newbie Lounge to Who's Who!

We settled on a 2008 230 Sundeck last night, no pix yet - we don't take delivery until Tuesday.

Have a couple of quick newbie questions -

I'm trying to decide on a GPS and I have it narrowed down to the Garmin GPSMap 440 or 540. If I get the version with the Sounder, can I tap into the transducer that's already on the boat or do I need to run another one to the transom?

The IPOD connector that comes with the stereo - does the connection work on an iPhone as well?

Thanks,
Fran

Fran,
Congratulations the 230 Sundeck is one sweet boat. As to the transducer, no you would have to add one. No problem I went with the Garmin Transom mount on mine. Nice to have both to check them when needed. Sorry can't help with the IPOD, but mine/some of them just have an aux port that might work.

I plugged my iPhone into one of the boats in our showroom once. It worked fine. I didn't turn on "Airplane mode" and didn't notice any interference. But, I only had it plugged in for about 5 or 6 minutes.

I have a 430. the inland version of the 440 and have the vision card for the coast.

If you are younger than 37 or so, the 440 will work fine. If you are older (need reading glasses) and you have enough real estate on the 230, go with the 540 for the larger screen. When I bought my 430 in 2007, I did not have a problem reading the screen. Last year was OK also. I can still get by this year, but reading glasses help.

Ye Charlie, they tell me there is two things about old age, one is eye sight and .....
I forget the other.

Is the 500 series still being made? I thought I heard something about them discontinuing them?

So it sounds like it just uses the same connector that you use at home for iPhones/iPods. I saw a picture (that I can't find now of course) on a Sea Ray related website that showed an iPod in some kind of a cradle that looked too small for an iPhone. That's good news. Hopefully it will charge the phone also.

Guess I'll find out Tuesday when I take delivery!

That's a bummer. Just out of curiosity, what's the reason the transducer on the boat can't be used?

The I-Pod connector works fine with the I-phone but it will not charge the I-Phone 3G.When the 3G came out apple changed the charging voltage from 12 volts to 5 volts. You can buy and adapter at the apple store for about 25 bucks that will allow the I-Phone 3G to charge.

Hmmm. Didn't know that. But... My dad has a 3G, I have the older one. He can use my charging cradle and it charges it OK. Why's that?

I'm in the same situation - my wife has an iPhone and I have and iPhone 3G. It seems that if you have a cable (or cradle) that does only charging, they can be interchanged. Some cables that allow music to be sent to a receiver can charge the iPhone but not 3G, more recent models can charge both.

Back to the cable on the boat, is there a place near the stereo where the iPod or iPhone can be safely stored while it's connected? I didn't notice any on the 230 before I bought it.

Well when I had hooked my Dad's 3G up to my computer with my "older" connector, iTunes opened and started downloading his pictures. I don't know, I don't understand why it wouldn't work. But you'll know when you try it.

When you open the starboard companionway door (where the radio is), there is a shelf there. IIRC, the cable should be laying right on the shelf. So, that is where your iPod will set. Also, don't quote me on this (I see a lot of boats and sometimes it's hard to remember all the "ins and out" of every one), but I think there is an MP3/Aux input in the little cubby that's down by the driver's feet.

Congratulations on the new 230 Sundeck, it is a nice ride. There are a couple of features on it that I would not mind having on mine. But hey that's what new models are for.

Our dashes are not that much different so to give you a idea of how I did it here is a photo. My most recent additon is the MP3 player plug I added to the empty spot across from the stero control at the right of the helm. The equipment is 400 Fish and 440 GPS series and I have the Standard Horzon under dash Phantom 2000 radio with control head mike. I added the seperate through hull transducer for the fish finder.

As for seeing well I can see it just fine with my bi-focals Charlie.

Phran, how's the boat?

Found out a bit of info on the iphone "charging" thing. Apparently the "fire wire" charger/data cable only works on the 1st gen. If the cable has a USB connector, it will work on any iphone - 1st gen, 3G, S.

I just bought this for the boat:

http://cgi.ebay.com/CAR-MOUNT-Winds...66:2|39:1|72:1234|240:1308|301:1|293:1|294:50

I haven't tried it yet but hope to get it this week and give it a whirl. I also purchased the Navionics iPhone APP which is a Marine GPS for the iPhone. I've used it a few times on the boat and it works incredibly well. Now I bought the mount to see keep it up all the time.
