Forum,
I am a new 2010 280 Sundancer owner as of February this year. I have a generally good knowledge of boating, but my experience with this boat has been horrific. I have drafted the below letter to my MarineMax of Clearwater, FL dealer, and I would appreciate any input anyone else may have with regards to this letter or what Sea Ray has done in the past. Also, if there exists an email address to send this letter to please let me know.

Thanks,
Anthony

Letters as follows with names omitted for privacy:
Mr. NAME,
I am addressing this letter to you as you have been assigned as my new sales representative after the retirement of Capt. NAME who I procured my 2010 Searay Sundancer 280 from. Let me first address in this letter that the level of service and satisfaction I have received from you, Mr. NAME, and MarineMax has been excellent. My issue is with my 2010 Searay Sundacer 280 with Hull #OMITTED, and not with MarineMax of Clearwater.

Since purchasing the vessel for $136,095+electronics in February of 2010, I have had the following issues with my vessel:
• Impeller on Engine
• Impeller on Generator
• Carbon Monoxide Detector throwing multiple faults causing generator shutdown
• A/C not driving water pressure through the cooling system • New CO Detector
• Numerous issues with the generator throwing random faults such as Low Coolant, Numbered
errors, etc.
• A refinishing of the bathroom door so it would shut, and it still doesn’t
• A replacement of all screws holding the circuit panel in place after it fell out many times
• A replacement of the door leading to the berth locking mechanism
• A replacement of the transom door handle/screws
• A replacement to the power steering column
MAJOR ISSUES:
• A replacement of the trim mechanism in the bilge, which caused me to cancel a business
meeting planned on the boat
• A currently needed replacement of parts of the gimble joint / crankshaft (assuming)
• A currently needed replacement of the automatic bilge opener as the entire unit came unscrewed from the base of the bilge.
• Other misc. items, which can be found on the service sheets at MarineMax of Clearwater

I am understanding of most issues with owning a boat such as impellers breaking, but the boat has been having issues after every weekend. I have also performed every requested service stated to me including a full detail. In fact, since February, I believe MarineMax emergency service or actual service has been called out to my vessel 15-20 times. It has been like clockwork that I end up placing a call to MarineMax service 9am on Monday mornings after a boat trip. Even the folks at my marina told me to be happy I had a warranty because they never saw such issues.

The issue that caused me to finally compose this letter occurred this Labor Day weekend. Since owning the boat, my fiancée, my best friend, and his girlfriend have attempted two lengthy trips in the boat. The first trip in late July was a failure because the CO monitor kept causing the generator to shutdown, and as such, our trip to Sanibel was cancelled as was a seemingly waste of $400 in food and beverages we spent for the trip. Second, this past weekend, we wanted to brave the trip again. Upon placing the boat in the water, the generator began smoking, and we could not make the trip. Moreover, the boat was making a horrific sound when turning. We decided to camp out on the boat that night, and we waited for emergency service in the morning. The generator needed a new impeller, and the technician advised that the noise just sounded like the Gimble Joint needed some lubrication. Nothing to worry about. Therefore, we decided to stay local, and again cancel our trip to Sanibel. At approximately 4pm ET on September 5th, 2010, a storm began to come, and we left Clearwater Beach for our Marina at Marker 1. On the way back, the noise that occurred when turning got progressively worse along with the conditions of the water getting progressively worse. Alas, in the pouring rain, the boat all of a sudden lost 99% of its power right near marker 12 between Clearwater Beach and Dunedin. Eventually, the engine just shut off. All passengers onboard the boat were horrified because we were on a dead approach of hitting the pylon. We eventually hit the pylon with minimal damage to the boat, and no way of avoiding it except to push off as hard as we could. From there, the boat decided to beach itself on a sandbar where we had to wait for TowBoat U.S. to bring us back to the marina – the third time since February.
At this point, I have lost all confidence in owning this vessel. I am fearful to take it out to sea more than a mile or two in case something breaks. I feel that the money and time spent preparing meals and packing for a nice trip to visit various parts of western Florida is no longer worth it as my vessel never seems to be up for the task at hand. Moreover, I have had business associates in town when issues came up with the boat that ended up canceling our trip. This has been an unbelievably horrible experience, and at a cost of over $2,000 per month between payments, insurance, and marina fees, I am very upset. This money would be better spent on a Cruise once a month then owning this SeaRay. I cannot even partake in the Halloween trip to Key West with MarineMax because of this lack of confidence, which was a trip my fiancée and I were looking forward to. I thought these things were supposed to be the joy of boating?

Finally, I considered asking for you at MarineMax to take this boat back from me at the cost I outlaid since February, and then, using that money towards a new boat. However, I no longer feel like owning another SeaRay would ever instill the boating confidence I would like to have on the water. This boat has been a headache since ownership, it has caused me and my fellow travelers numerous stresses and fears, which now outweigh any fun memories. If this was an automobile, I would easily be covered under lemon law, but alas, I am currently in the hands of you at MarineMax along with SeaRay as a company to make this purchase right. On a final note, I do want to remain an active boater, and I am asking for help to do so.

Very kind regards,
Anthony

Re: New 2010 SeaRay Sundancer 280 Problems - HELP!!

Sorry to hear you have had so many problems with your new boat. I empathize with you and the frustration you must feel having spent that kind of money. I hope that MM and Searay will make it right. Good luck!

Re: New 2010 SeaRay Sundancer 280 Problems - HELP!!

Anthony, so sorry to hear of this. How many hours do you have the boat? Was it ever in the water, prior to you owning it?

Re: New 2010 SeaRay Sundancer 280 Problems - HELP!!

I have 2007 280 sundancer w T-220HP and the only con is the size of the fuel tank. all boat need general maintenance. I do not understand hull # ?????????

Re: New 2010 SeaRay Sundancer 280 Problems - HELP!!

I currently have 41 hours on the engine since February. I have used approximately 400 gallons of gas between engine/generator. As far as I know, the boat only had 1.5 hours on the engine before I took delivery so I would assume it was in the water for a demonstration to another potential customer.

I keep the boat at a very reputable High and Dry in the Tampa area as well.

The last question was that I just left my hull number blank for privacy.

Re: New 2010 SeaRay Sundancer 280 Problems - HELP!!

I will not minimize the problems you have had but keep in mind most of the big issues seem to be with equipment made by someone other than Sea Ray.....namely your engine, outdrive, generator, and CO detector. I would not sell Sea Ray short because of this but the proof of the pudding will be in what Sea Ray and the dealer do to step up to the problem.

Keep us posted.

Dave

Sorry to hear about all your issues. I had several "minor" issues when I took delivery this past spring. Biggest issue was the head toilet always running and noise in the audio system My dealer caught a bad water pressure sensor before delivery. I now have everything working (but almost the entire season to fix). I hope your new boat is not indicative of Sea Ray quality. I hope after your issues are fixed you can enjoy your boat with some peace of mind.

Some 'glitches' are to be expected I suppose but that's almost unbelievable. Did you get the boat assembled by the disgruntled employee or what?
Hopefully SR and / or MM can somehow make it right for you.
I've owned Sea Rays for many years and have had quite the opposite experience.

Re: New 2010 SeaRay Sundancer 280 Problems - HELP!!

I am curious if SeaRay ups their quality assurance on the multi-engine vessels due to their more seafaring capabilities... any thoughts?

What do you guys think would be an acceptable solution to my problem?

Personally, i'd like my initial deposit and monthly payments paid back to be and I would like to put it towards a used 2009 310/330 instead if possible.

Contact Sea Ray directly in Knoxville, TN. They are known for having great customer service and they will help you out. The customer service number is 800-648-8535.

I will send you a PM with another number too.

Re: New 2010 SeaRay Sundancer 280 Problems - HELP!!

I had similar problems with a boat I purchased from MM in Clearwater. It sounds as if you've given them numerous opportunities to fix it. I would make an appointment with Bill McGill, the owner of MarineMax. After I spoke to Bill everything was resolved and I continue to buy
from them today.

Re: New 2010 SeaRay Sundancer 280 Problems - HELP!!

MarineMax of Clearwater has been a very good dealer to us. I would give them the oppertunity to bring your request up with SeaRay. As mentioned by Dave seems the big issue is with engine (Mercruiser), generator (Kohler) and CO alarm (Firefox). I know low batteries can cause generator to shut down due to CO going into alarm. This can be solved by unplugging CO power and plugging back in after generator is started with battery charger activated, generator will recharge batteries which will have enough voltage to keep CO from alarmig, works with engines as well. Check your batteries for low water, mine were low on delivery. I had MM replace all 4, type 31s.

Ask for Capt Keith from Clearwater MM to come out and go over everything, he is really good and has delivered all 3 of our SeaRays. Work with James in service, he is really good to work with also, tell Keith and James I sent you. Don't give up on SeaRay, we all have had problems but they are geneally a very good boat, but seems you have a real lemon. Give SeaRay & MarineMax Clearwater a chance to make things right, whether that's a new boat or compensation for your lose of quality use.

Good luck and keep us posted. I am right next door at Home Port Marina, stop by sometime for a brew at Ozona Blue. PM me.

Best of luck,

It seems like the boat was abused before you took delivery. You can burn up the impellers by running them dry. The u-joint can be damaged by running the engine with the drive in the trailer position.

Some of the other things are typical punch list items. You definitely have some QC problems as well. This should be brought to the attention of management at Sea Ray.

I understand your concerns and think your letter is well worded.

I am so sorry this is happening to you. I too have had minor problems, but just run of the mill. Most things I could fix myself. I agree with JV II on the impellar issues. My boat is an 05, purchased in 08 with 30 min on her. First thing out the chute, impellars. Gen and drive. Thinking cause it sat dry for 3 years.

I just recently had a major engine failure (that's Mercruiser and not Sea Ray). I had the options of taking the boat to other mercruiser authorized service centers, i.e. cheaper. I went to Sea Ray as my store is Ambassador certified and for whatever reason I feel like they"ll stand by their work if I have any issues.

Only thing I have for you is this is indeed horrible, maybe call Sea Ray direct and when offered extended warranty, take it.

There is a gal on this site that is a Sea Ray factory tech as I recall. Maybe search around and look for her posts and see if she maybe has any advice.

Keep us advised as to the outcome if you wish. Interested to see how this works out for you.

Brett McGill form MarineMax of Clearwater got right on top of this first thing this morning. He called me, and the are going to bring the boat back to MM of Clearwater and get SeaRay involved. Very impressed with the quick reply so far.

Thanks to everyone for the input. The only other question I am inclined to ask is what does everyone feel would be a fair solution in this matter? I know that I would like my money back, and the ability to buy a new boat. However, I doubt that will be the likely outcome.

I think that if MM can resolve the issues, you keep the boat. You could try and get your $$$ back, but I'd think that as long as MM was trying in good faith to resolve these issues, you wouldn't have a legal leg to stand on. They do appear to be trying to honor the warranty and that's all they have to do. I'd grit my teeth and work with them until this was all resolved.

Best of luck in getting these issues handled!

Just ask for a great deal on a new bigger boat and forget about that nightmare you were so unfortunate to buy...

The first thing you need to ask yourself is if the boat worked perfectly would it still be your choice? If so, let them attempt to fix all the problems with the caveat that they only get one or two more chances. After that you most likely will be in a postion to ask for your money back, or at least get full value as an exchange for the same or larger Sea Ray.
