New 185 Owner. Few ?s

Dutchman,

I hear what Blaster is saying about your question and indeed it is an anode but I have the same boat as you and I have the fin you are talking about and indeed like you I also have powered steering.

I'm not suggesting Blaster is incorrect, but thought it worthwhile responding to alay any of your questions as to if you should change yours.

Also, I ifind it strange that the 175 would have the fin to counteract the prop torque (which I agree that's what it's there for) but the 185 which is only slightly bigger wouldn't have one??

Maybe someone else (Lazydaze) could offer a more eleborate answer.:smt038

Yeah my stingray 556zp had the tab on the anode with the 3.0 even though it came with power steering but my 180 br with the 3.0 didn't. Don't understand why. Only thing I can figure is they were offered without power steering too so they just came that way.

In response to the anode/fin questions...when I initially bought my boat (2008 185 4.3L) it didn't have the fin. When I bought a Stainless Steel prop there was a RED note in the package that said that due to the improved performance of the prop it was recommended to add the anode with the fin. I did add it and no regrets so far. The first time out with the SS prop the boat seemed to "wander" more than it did originally at low speeds...mid to high was no issue. I added the fin and seemed to help the low-speed wandering a bit.

I've purchased a couple of props from iboats.com and prices seem very good (last one was under $100)...

NOTE: Make sure you look carefully and pick correct rotation, if yours is like mine it is STANDARD rotation. There are CR (Counter Rotating props) in some sizes that match up with our boats too so watch it. Otherwise you'll have an interesting time when you put in the water!!!

Good luck!

I had to replace the fin anode with a flat anode when I went to the Mercury Enertia prop. The prop has such a long rake, it would hit the fin.

I ran into the same thing putting a laser 2 on my old stingray. The high rake didn't allow enough room.

I have a 2007 185 with 4.3L Merc and flat anode. Would like to add fin anode to reduce low speed wander but looks like several exist. Anyone have a source or part number?

I have had personal experience with high speed impact damage in i/o and outboard motors. After a certain speed it really doesn't matter what material your prop is made of either way your lower unit will be toast. Newer props have a hub assembly which will break before gears can be twisted in the lower unit. A steel prop can take shells and sand with little to no damage while an aluminum prop will be destroyed.

Good points - and my experience as well. The plastic drive sleeve will give way and hopefully give you some protection. Which raises the point, you will probably need a new hub kit as your sleeve is probably damaged. Mine was, and the drive sleeve adapter was also damaged coming out of the prop because it was jammed in so badly.

These guys were recommended to me for repairs by another person on this board and they did a good job at a reasonable price: http://www.propmd.com/

In addition to the repairs, they sold me a Mercury factory hub kit at a much better price than quoted by my dealer.

They may also be able to get you a second prop at a decent price. Having two is a good idea as others have suggested.

Finally! A sports boat thread. I was beginning to think CSR was only for cruisers.

Second battery...yes
Second bilge...overkill IMO. If one bilge pump cant clear an 18' vessel (which is most often from the plug being left out or a small bow crest) then your either boating in seas you shouldn't be, or over a reef.
An affordable depth finder is very helpful as these Florida waters are notorious for going from 6ft to 1ft in no time! Nothing beats using your own eyes, but it's a nice tool to have.
Enjoy the 4.3L. I don't need to go 50 so i put a 19pSS on mine and it's a nice balance.
How are people putting a trim tab anode on!? With a 14" diameter, there is no room for a tab.

JMO, but has anyone ever seen the anemic Attwood OE pump on our boats? Thats EXACTLY why I installed a second pump and thru hull. :) I'd betcha they hardly pump 200 gph at the outlet. Forget the rating stamped on the pump btw. Thats not the actual #.
