Guys I have an issue with the "roller" on the shift at the engine cable side not seating correctly. This is causing the the boat to not start. tough to explain but the roller should be sitting in the center of the "V" and it is sitting out of alignment. The roller position controls spark to the engine. This is a 92 Alpha. Not sure how to adjust without messing up the shift cable adj. If i hold it in position it starts and runs fine. But if it stalls it may not restart unless I open up hatch which could be difficult if in tight quarters.
I hope this makes sense.
Adding picture for clarification. white roller on switch is out of alignment.

Is there some sort of part that holds the cable that got bent? Maybe tweaking the bracket where the cable is tied down to the engine will move it to the proper location without adjusting the shift cable?

and the last time the drive was removed for servicing?
shift cable may need replacement
That switch is the shift interupter not a neutral safety, neutral safety is in the control box

You can google to find the documents for the full lower cable installation and adjustment - I replaced my lower cable last year and it wasn't too bad, however, I found you really need to do the full adjustment start to finish, not just try to find the steps you need to fix your problem. There are three cables, Upper shift, Lower shift and throttle. The Upper shift cable goes to the shifter and the Lower cable goes to the drive. When you move the shifter, the upper cable moves a plate that is attached to the lower cable, thus shifting the drive - this also moved the shift interrupt switch momentarily cutting the ignition while the shifting happens. Assuming yours is shifting ok, you probably need to adjust the upper cable. The main adjustment in both cables is done via the barrel nut - one on each cable. Again, if it is shifting ok, leave the lower cable alone and adjust the upper cable by moving the barrel nut in or out. If it is not shifting ok, you either need to adjust or replace the lower shift cable - they don't normally just come out of adjustment, usually start having shifting problems due to the lower cable wearing. Move the upper cable barrel nut in one turn increments - in my case I moved the barrel a couple of turns forward, because I was having to pull the shifter almost into Revers to get it into Neutral. The adjustments sound more complicated than they are - once I replaced my lower cable and took the time to go through the adjustments, mine shifts perfectly smooth.

that is what it is called thanks, I knew it wasn't Neutral safety. I need to adjust so the roller sit dead center in the bracket. I did heads last year and hopefully didn't bend spring out of place.

I will check google to see if they have anything as well as looking at upper cable for adjustments (your are reffering to the cables from the helm throttle correct. thanks.
here is part I am speaking of to be clear. I will ad it to original post.

Upper runs to throttle/shifter, lower runs to drive

remove the cotter pin for the brass barrel and pop the barrel out. roller should self -center.

if the roller is not setting in correct position either a bad or very dirty lower cable is holding it up or the spring has lost tension to pull it back. lower cable is 99 percent your issue..

now i am a bit confused. most guys are saying cable from shift at helm is the reason the roller is out of position. you are saying lower. my lower was just replace last year, it is shifting good once i get it started. but it keeps going into wrong position in bracket.
