I have searched both on here and on Youtube for detailed pics and/or a video to change out the raw water pump/impeller on my 5.0 MPIs w/ BIII drives and I have found none. Can anyone help me out? I want to tackle this maintenance on my own but need some help.

Also, I have seen step by step instructions on the impeller changeout for my Kohler 5ECD and I think I could do that. Does anyone have a picture of theirs with the impeller located? I think I have found it, but the housing where I think it is seems very small. I just want to be sure before I start taking stuff apart.

Thanks in advance!

Matt, I can't help with the videos, but... Investing in a set of service manuals would probably be a great idea. They should give you everything you want to know and more.

I can't help with the videos either but as for the water pumps for your B3's you should have no problem finding posts or step by steps for that. I don't know how tight your engine compartment is with the twins but my guess is that space will be your biggest obstacle. The impeller itself is a piece of pie.

Is the boat going to be out of the water? Its important!

Dennis: I really need to get a set of manuals. I have just been procrastinating. Any place have them cheaper than the Merc site?

Aweigh: The boat will be in the water, unless I can talk Loneranger into taking his boat off the lift in the spring and letting me borrow the space! (Hint, hint, John.)

Just make sure you have a good plan to raise and secure the inlet hoses above the water line. Again space may be tight but the impellers themselves should be easy enough.

Doesn't "Presentation" have the same set up in a 280? He has made some informative posts in the past. Im sure he has covered the impellers.

I don't know how to change out the impeller but I have a single engine 2003 5.0 MPI w/ B3 on my boat and the water pump is located on the lower left side of the engine (looking to stern). Mine is belt driven and has 2 blue drain plugs (upper & lower).

I didn't look at the video that John linked to, but when it comes to a B3 raw water pump and impeller... a B3 pump is a B3 pump is a B3 pump. There's been changes made to them over the years, but nothing that would really matter in regards to changing the impeller. What can change is the access to the pump. The pump is always in the same location, from engine to engine and year to year. But, the fuel/water separator has changed designs over the years and the newer one (drop-in style filter) makes it a little tougher. You probably have the newer style.

As far as manuals, to the best of my knowledge they are only available through Merc dealers (doesn't have to be a boat dealer - just a Merc certified repair facility). You might find them on ebay, though - I've seen them there on occasion.

I might have one sitting on a shelf at the store... collecting dust. I could sell it to you a pretty good price - we have decided not to stock manuals anymore as they don't sell as well as they used to. Besides, we can get them in a day or two if a customer wants one. I'd have to check it compared to your engine's serial number. If it's the manual I'm thinking of, it would work even if the serial number didn't match up - there might just be small differences here or there.

The Kohler pump housing is small compared to the engine pump. I looked but do not have a picture. It sticks out on the side of generator all by itself. Easiest impeller ever to change out.

This thread has a lot of links to manuals including the service manuals at one time, if they no longer work let me know. I may have another source for you.

I am not sure how much space you have with twins. The impeller change on my Cobalt is a piece of cake. The Mercruiser is a PITA. For the mercruiser it is easiest to remove the entire pump and replace the impeller on the bench. This requires removing the belt and a few hoses, nothing very technical just PITA stuff.
I changed the mercruiser to know that I could now I will probably pay my mechanic and let him bust his knuckles.

I just changed my Kohler 5ec impeller. Looking at the font of the gen. the pump is on the right lower side. There are 4 bolts that hold the cover plate. Remove the 4 bolts and then the plate. Observe the impeller blade rotation angle and using a pair of pliers (e.g. needle nose) grab the impeller and pull straight out. Take some lube (soap or grease) and coat the inside of the pump housing. This will help on impeller installation. Take the new impeller and while compressing the blades at the correct angle of rotation push into the housing while rotating so it will fit on the pump shaft. If you have a new O ring you can replace the original that seals the cover plate to the pump and reinstall. Thats it!

The engine water pump is a hard job so on mine I let the marina do the changing.

PM me with your email address if you'd like the Service Manual, I'd be happy to send it to you.

I am glad to hear about the Kohler impeller. I thought that it was on the lower right side (tracing the hoses), but wanted to be sure. Yes, it does appear to be simple. Thank you guys for giving me the back up.

PMs sent for the manuals. I'll get my engine S/Ns tomorrow when I go down to the boat to winterize the water systems.
