I have twin 454 340hp merc.
My port motor starter died. I purchsed a new one on ebay for $85 I installed and my motor wont start.

I think both my motors spin the same way that i dont have reverse rotaion on the motors but on the trassmissions???

I was able to get the old starter to work. if i lay it down in front of me and put a jumper box on it the old one spins ccw looking from the back

the new one spins cw. looking from the back

so what kind of starter do i need? i know when the starter hits the fly wheel it spins the motor a different direction.

thanks for the help

Both motors are right handed. the transitions are what makes counter rotation. starters are same. if you have the one out bring it to a shop they will test for you. it can be rebuilt.

Wait a minute.........are you sure they are both the same rotation. Most of the '88's with Borg Warner transmissions had on cw and one ccw engine and that particular transmission cannot be turned backwards......for very long, anyway.

Wait a min.......a standard 454/7.4L engine is Left handed.
Reverese rotation is a Right handed motor.

Typically, a inboard motor using a transmission and a bell housing installed starter uses a reverse rotation starter for the standard rotation motor and a standard rotation starter for a reverse rotation motor.
If your starters are engine mounted like a car, use a standard rotation starter for a standard (left hand) rotation motorand a reverse rotation starter for a reverse rotation motor . the dist turns in a clockwise manner

Mark, You are correct.

Reverse rotation is a Right handed motor.
Thanks for straightening that out.

I compared both starters the teeth of old one turn in different direction. The replacement is a ccw.
I guess I have to get a cw. One
my stater is mounted on the bell housing rear of motor on right side. It's very easy to get to middle of bilge. Have to say lot of room in er. Going to try to install old one so I can winterize the motor. I was able to take apart old one and free up
