So the family and I and another boat are thinking about heading to Long Island for Memorial day weekend. We will be traveling over from the Raritan Bay. Don't want to go all the way out to Sag. Was thinking Merrick. Like the Blue Water Yacht Club. Any suggestions? Looking for a nice place, family oriented, pool would be nice, and within walking distance to restuarants and other touristy stuff. I looked at Sheepshead bay but don't think that is a touristy area. Any ideas from our members?

Hey Alvin
I dock at BWYC.Great place to spend a few days,The pool is clean and there will be a new resturant at BWYC on the property, there are two other places to eat next door.If you have one they are very dog friendly. Very close to Freeport Nautical Mile where there are a bunch of bars and places to eat in doors and out,not sure if you have small ones but they have miniture golf for them. The air show comes right over head so any cove is a good seat or ever at the Marina they fly right over head and you can see entire show without leaving the dock. My friends and I are on E dock in front of the Club House/new resturant.Follow the sound of blenders and you,ll find us,,lol

Spike,
I actually keep my boat in blue water. They are currently converting the Club house into a resturant. There are also 2 other open resturants in walking distance. The marina has a pool and bathrooms. Also Freeport is ver close by to go for the day by boat. LEt me know if u need more info on anything

Rob

Hey Detjoet and Rob,

Thanks for the info. Nice to hear some of the members here are at that Marina and like it. We will be bring 2 boats. Mine and my brother-in-laws Monterey 260SCR. My wife and my 2 kids will be coming with me. Ages 3 and 6. My Brother-in-law is also coming with his wife and his 4 year old. So kid friendly is a must which it sounds like it is. I just spoke to Kelly and they really don't really have dedicated transient slips, more of what they don't use as seasonal they use as transient so I was told to call her next week and she will know better. She the Restuarant their will be open soon. What other stuff is there to do within walking distance? That air show you mentioned is that over Memorial day weekend?

How long does it take you guys to get to the Verazano Bridge? I am guessing alittle under 2 hours. Just trying to gauge how long it should take me to get there. By looking at the map I am thinking alittle over 3hours from Parlin, NJ.

Would be great to met you guys and any additional info would be great. Are there other Marina's in the area you would recommend also incase Kelly doesn't have anything available?

Thanks,

Alvin

Alvin,
Kellys great people. With out a car the resturants are ur only destinations. Freeport " nautical mile " is like a resturant and small nick nac shops row. There is even a mini golf place. They have day slips but not to sure about over nites. This could be a day trip thing if u get into BWYC . U must take ur boat cant walk .

any help i can be let me know . We are away most weekends but there are pleanty of great people to guide and help,

Rob

Rob,

Was just reading in the Northeast Forum about the Air show. Looks cool. Do you think it is going to be a madfest that weekend? Or should I venture up. I am confident in my skills but I don't want drunk lunatics all over the place. We were looking for a nice, relaxing destination with the kids.

So sounds like Freeport is boating distance from BWYC for the shops. That is good to know.

Any ideas on timing from the mouth of the Hudson or the Verazano. I see some other NJ member heading out to LI that weekend also. Maybe they will chime in here.

i cruise at about 30 MPH. FRom Blue water to the verazano id say is about 2 - 2.5 hrs. ( its been a bit since ive been up the hudson. )

Cant lie it is a zoo during and right after the show. I'm way out east a day before the freak show. We usaully come home late on monday again to avoid everyting. The problem is also the area is very narrow. NOt like u have a wide open bay. If ur comfortable in ur skills. Then yes do come. It will be a show in all aspects. Just take ur time and i apologize in advance for the morons.

Thanks again Rob. So it sounds more like a 3 hour run for me. I usually cruise around 30 MPH also. And it take about 45 minutes to get to the Verazano.

So your not going to do that Raft up on that Zach Bay's thread? Is that close to BWYC? Sorry for all the questions. Just thought if I could fit that in and plan it out accordingly I would try to go and meet some of the nice members of CSR. If not I'll just play it shotgun. I most post over on that Zach's bay thread as well to see when and how from the NJ side is going to LI that weekend.

Zachs bay is very close to BWYC. Im bad with time maybe 20 mins with the no wake zone.

Feel free to ask away.

Rob

They have wireless setup at BWYC? Don't see it on the website. Any must do's that you guys would recommend?

Zacks Bay is insane on Memorial Day Weekend. It's a great show if the weather is nice, but it does get crazy. Saturday is usually better than Sunday if you do decide to go.

It does get pretty packed..Depending on how many of my older kids and friends show up I will take them into the bay and troll around while they watch some of the show,Not worth anchoring unless you are willing to watch the whole show. You can see most of it from the marina which is directly in line with Jones Beach theater where the show takes place.Or you can head out into the ocean, less boats, and watch the show.Im sure the kids will enjoy the pool more than the air show and you guys will enjoy thr E dock crew, say sorry to you liver now,,lol Freeport has a few free slips for day trips and pay slips for over night but I think they are expensive. If you eat at any of the resturants you dont pay for the slip and some have walked around for a while before leaving with no problems from resturant. Not to much to see by BWYC within walking distance, but any supplies you need feel free to ask for a ride, main drag is about a mile away for anything we need. My 11 yr old brings his playstation on the weekends so your kids would be welcome to join in. Feel free to ask about anything else.

Not sure if they have tranient slips at Wantagh Park. It's a Nassau County Park a little east of BWYC. Probably an even better view of the air show from there if you decide to stay at the dock. You'll still need to catch rides to places, but if BWYC is full and you really want to stay in the general area it might be another possibility.
Getting shore transportation to places after you dock the boat is going to be a problem in most places in this area of Long Island.
Personally, I would rather go to Fire Island and enjoy the beach. The only problem out there is that the marinas that are run by the National Park Service fill up real fast early in the week with people looking to claim their spot for the weekend.

Joe was nice to meet you and thank you for checking up on us. BWYC was great and Kelly and Justin and the crew there are really nice. I think we are going to make this an annual event as the kids loved the air show.

Rob I'll see you next year there. :)
