I have a C120 Raymarine chartplotter with Navionics Platinum+ card. Detail in Florida is great. Detail in Bahamas sucks. Navionics card says Florida and Bahamas.
Is the Raymarine detail in the Bahamas just that bad or ??????????

Jack

Jack,

It's not a RM issue, the display will show whatever's on the Navionics chip- wouldn't matter if you had a Furuno display, it would be the same. I have the 906 chart...you?
Are you sure you have all the chart detail settings set to "on"?

I also have the "Fish 'N Chip" - a separate chip designed for fishing- features alot more bathymetric detail. I assume that's what you're looking for? I don't use it around here since the Gulf is flat as a pancake- but I'll check it tomorrow to see if it has better detail than the 906 chart.

You might also want to contact Jeff Brodeur at Navionics. Super helpful, very responsive, and he's a serious fisherman as well. You can email him: jbrodeur@navionics.com

I'll pm you tomorrow if I find out anything.

Jack,

Navionics now has a detailed Bahamas chart. I got it last year in August. You have three choices I think. I got the Platinum as it runs on my E120.

Also the Maptech lawsuit was settled and you can now purchase all area 9 charts. I purchased all three from Landfall last fall. It was about 300 bucks I think.

Tob,
I bought the 699+ navionics platinum. The number you have(906) is a Gold. I think this might be my issue as the platinums may not be compatible with the C120. This I don't understand as it works perfect around Florida over to Bimini.
I'll E-mail jeff.
Ken,
Did you scroll around at all in the Bahamas? What was the detail like?

Sorry Tob I think I do have the 906. DUH!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys Jack

Your issue probably has nothing at all to do with the Raymarine hardware, it's likely because of differences in the source material Navionics loads onto the chip. The US is generally extensively covered by detailed and relatively recent survey data that NOAA uses to build the charts; updates are facilitated by a network of contributors who provide constant feedback and corrections. Foreign charts are usually the product of the equivalent agency to NOAA in that country, which may or may not have the wherewithal to produce the quality of chart we enjoy here, or come from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA). NGA produces world-wide charts primarily for military purposes and does some surveying but ultimately relies mostly on the local source or history. In the case of the Bahamas, last I looked, a lot of the data was from British Admiralty surveys from the 19th Century. Not sure about the C120 but some applications which use the Navionics chips can display the source chart number being used; what you see on your screen is nothing more than a digitized representation of that paper chart. Having said the above, you may want to compare a paper chart of the areas you are concerned with with your display. If there are significant differences in the level of detail between a chart and your display I would think you would have a potential beef with Navionics, but I doubt that is the case.

Jack,

Ours has exactly the same detail as the Region 9 Chart Kits we got from Landfall. Very detailed with sounding through out Bahamas. The reason I got it is our East Florida Chart had some detail but was lacking in areas such as Bimini Bay.

I scrolled and zoomed around Port Lucay, Bimini Bay, and Cat Cay. Sounding were very very detailed.

alnav,
Very informative. I will compare Paper to Display as I have all the Bahamas charts.

Ken,
So you have a seperate chip for detailed Bahamas?

Jack

From what I understand, explorer charts are 'the' charts to have in the Bahamas. I currently have a Northstar m84 which runs C-Map charts. I know C-Map has included the explorer charts in their max product or whatever they are called. I am not sure if Navionics included the explorer charts. But, if you look at the explorer website or have explorer charts, I would look at that detail and compare to the digital chart and see any differences. Maybe the Navionics Platinum plus or whatever the latest greatest chip is will have the explorer already loaded. I know the C-Map detail on the digital charts are pretty impressive but I have never compared them to Navionics.

Jack,

Yes it is a navionics chip of just the Bahamas. Nothing else of detail on the chip. I didfind some east Florida on it, but very small scale with no detail.

All of the Bahama detail zooms to harbor detail.

edit: I can get you the part number mid April when we are back in Florida. I think it is 699P.
