Looking for a beutiful anchorage South of Tampa 50 - 100 miles to spend a night or two. Would love to back up inside the barrier island and walk to shore like we do at home. Don't want to have to splash the dinghy prior to the Dry Tortugas. Beach access desired. Secluded, but other boaters would be nice (during the week anyway).

Venice area? Something like that, but more secluded. Any recommendations appreciated.

John,

Not quite as far south as you mentioned, but a beautiful anchorage nontheless is off Longboat Key in an area called Jewfish Key. It's just south of Anna Maria Island and is a beautiful area. I'll let some of the other local experts chime in, but you might want to check the Southeast Cruisers website for some ideas.

Thanks! I was looking at that. Anyone else?

There is also a small island just inside the Venice inlet. Shallow on the front side, deeper on the back side.

If you go inside near the inlet, go south past Marine Max Venice. There is a sharp bend where you can anchor, and walk over to the beach side. You should be able to see it on your GPS. Very narrow strip of island.
