Hello there everyone,
We are taking delivery tomorrow on a 2001 sundancer 310. We know from the survey that the port navigation light isn't working and we want to go out tomorrow night. How do you access this to get to the bulb? Does the lens cover just popoff or what to get to the bulb to see what it is? We didn't pay attention to how to access when we were looking at the boat since we didn't know it was bad. We do have a west marine near us where hopefully we can get a replacement bulb.
Thanks,
Mrs Drifter

It may be a Perko light. I have had a problem with one of mine (2002 360). There is one philips screw holding the chrome trim piece on the top. Remove that screw and you'll find easy access to the bulb.

In my case, the bulb was fine, but the wires needed to be re-crimped due to a bad ground connection.

The festoon-type bulbs (most common type) are held in place by tension between a couple of metal plates. Often these corrode- pop the bulb out (check the filament to see if it's good) then clean up the contacts and the bulb bases with some wet/dry sandpaper. Pop the bulb back in and see if that solves the problem.

If not, check to see if voltage is present.

Both posts are correct....1 phillips screw gets it off. From my own experience...be careful and don't drop anything in the water. If you don't align the gasket properly to seal it off, it will quit working again soon.

:smt100 Sorry to bring up this old post but I'm trying to solve a non-working starboard nav light and I searched and found this thread but it just doesn't quite tell me what to do after I get the stainless steel cover off. I am faced with a plastic moulding which seems to have no further screws to undo, but doesn't seem to want to come off the deck. Before I take to it with a rubber mallet, I thought I'd check that there are no hidden screws somewhere. I have looked in the chain locker but there is no access to the light in there. I have also looked in the cabin but unless I start pulling apart the upholstery, I can not see any access there either. I can't imagine that this is that difficult but having never had one of these nav lights apart before, I'm just not sure how to proceed.

Terry,

We have that exact same perko light on our 280 Sundancer.

After you remove the screw and chrome cover the plastic is held on by nothing.

If your cover is stuck I’d take a small straight blade screwdriver and try to carefully wedge it between the plastic cover and rubber gasket until it pops off.

Hey thanks Presentation. That's just the info I needed. I thought it had to be easier than where I was trying to go!

one screw on top
then a littl elbow grease
its usually stuck
bur nothing else holds it on

Thanks guys, I had the same question, felt like a knucklehead not being able to get to a light bulb.

Actually this NAV Light is Manufactured by Attwood, not Perko. The Masthead light is a Perko.

I would recommend changing the rubber gasket if it is dried out which will keep moisture out of the housing and improve the life of the bulb. These can be purchased form Attwood.

I would also recommend a liberal amount of silicone caulking under the fitting to seal the hole the wires are in. My 310 was not sealed here and water was entering the cabin here......and this was a brand new boat when I purchased in 2002.

Another navigation light fiasco...

I have a 2001 310 Sundancer and out of the blue the navigation lights (all of them) stopped working. I opened the fuse panel and pushed to reset the navigation fuse and no luck. I took the port side light apart (maybe all of them blew?) and it looks as good as new. Only last week everything was functioning fine and I'm not sure where to go from here. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Check to see if you have power to the fixture, if no, check both sides of switch, if no, go check both sides of breaker (switch or breaker may be bad - they can fail). You can use a test light or a volt meter.
