Navigation Light

Radar is useless in close proximety to danger. If money is no object get FLIR. I think the remote spot and handheld both have their place.

Just my opinion.

Radar, used properly, keeps you out of those close proximity situations.

My point is that radar is no panacea, there are many things that will ruin your day that do not show up on radar. FLIR provides much more definition, but, all of these nav aids must always be used with common sense about each of their limitations.

Redundancy and situational awareness are a must.

The process I use at night includes the radar and the plotter for position and objects.

On one boat, the radar wasn't powering up for a 4th fireworks run and we remained in the marina 'till all was good. I have a routine and a checklist and you don't leave the dock w/ a problem.

The search light is sometimes handy.

The Fujinon Nautilus 7x50 ARC-SX binoculars have excellent low-light transmission and I use these at night when scanning the water for debris.

So I scan through the above and the gauges when operating at night.

A set of low beam / high beam headlights haven't made the list.

I find the bow mounted spotlight useful at times, mainly because it doesn't reduce night vision as much as a hand held light. That said, it definitely does not respond as quickly as a handheld. So I use the remote one rarely, mainly to ID crab pots at low speeds, and I have a handheld at the helm which I haven't ever used (yet). Of course, FLIR would be nice for identifying crabpots, etc. at night but for the rare times we're out at night, it's not worth the expense. Although it is cool. Hmmmmmm.

And yes, I use radar at night, but the radar doesn't reliably find crabpots.

Damn crabpots!:smt021
