Nater Potater's Build Thread

I was lucky. When I bought my first 268 my dealer was amazing. Mom and pop. Spent days with me teaching me everything, all systems, how to drive, dock, everything. The old Gunpowder Cove Marina before it got bought by corporate company. Local guys know. Taught me all about alcohol stoves.

I still use a white gas stove. A Coleman 116E that I got from my grandparents, back in the mid 80s. They bought it new and we use it all the time. The alcohol stove is pretty much the same as ones I have built from pop cans, as you have to preheat them. But not having any way of metering the flame is not good. I had to use the drink I had to shut it down and it emptied the tank pretty fast. I figured it's best to not use it until I can get it rebuilt. I need to pull it out of the boat and see what I can find. Kenyon has been, less than helpful. We've picked up a few of the canister stoves from Big 5 for less than $20 on sale. Pretty neat little stoves. I still love my white gas though. Only thing propane around here is the crab cooker. Hank Hill wouldnt like me much.

We use the 40 year old pressurized alcohol (Kenyon) stove on our boat daily. We burn the 99+% isopropyl alcohol in it. They are very finicky with humidity when lighting them. We started keeping the lid closed after they cooled down and it made all the difference in the world. Leaving the lid open for extended periods with the boat stored, seemed to mess with the initial ignition and often took 5-10 mins to get them to burn correctly. Seemed like if there was any condensation in them, guessing just from atmosphere, it mixed with the initial alcohol when lighting and compromised how the systems works. Pretty handy accessary on the boat.

"Taste the meat, not the heat". If you haven't seen it, find the episode where Peggy and Bobby are introduced to charcoal-cooked burgers, and they end up slinking around behind Hank's back while they cook on charcoal. As for me, we cook our burgers on a Traegar smoker and couldn't be happier!

Humidity and taxes is all we have to look forward to here in western Oregon. Both are high.

Mine had never been used that I could see. Someone had used the electric burners a few times but the gas had no visible heat signs. The seals are no good from sitting. That is my problem. Finding the seals has turned up nothing at all. Well it's turned up that nobody wants to have anything to do with liability.

Dad found one made in Sweden, pre WWII. I have seen that those seals can be had. Thought about seeing if they might work. Nice stove. All polished chrome and brass. He got it at a garage sale and still has the tape price tag of $5 on it.

U-cup for the pump (I believe) https://www.cookwithkenyon.com/shop/u-cup/

Fill cap seal - https://www.cookwithkenyon.com/shop/fill-cap-gasket/

If the control valve packing is leaking and you don't have anymore adjustment left on the gland nut, try some Teflon packing string. I've been able to resurrect a couple of ancient Coleman lanterns with this stuff. https://www.amazon.com/Danco-80794-...ix=teflon+valve+stem+packing,tools,188&sr=1-2

The pump and cap are GTG. It's the rest of the seals that are dried up. I need to pull it from the galley and play with it this winter. I will check the teflon packing. I know the white gas is as easy on stuff as Naptha. Not sure about alcohol and teflon.

It could be as easy as a good cleaning. Could have a shaving in there or who knows what, making it not meter properly.

:( Just when we were starting to have fun.

I didnt know. Never messed with alcohol and teflon. I do know that it has eaten through cheap latex gloves. Not that I was worried about the alcohol, just the grease I was removing from the parts.

Well if Nate doesn't want to take you up on the invite, I'll be right over. You had me at crabbing...:D
More the merrier. We went down off one of the docks for about an hour and a half (as long as dad could be out) and caught three Dungeness (6" and 6.5") and a bunch of Red Rock crabs. It's about an hour and a half from the house. Might do better if from the runabout in the mouth of the bay.

Great thread. Hoping my new to me boat has less work, but I hope to be deep into it soon.
Thank you! It sounds like you might be getting your hands greasy soon. Have you started a thread for your project? We all love to see pictures.

Hey Nater, the Dungies have been fantastic, so far this year. I've made it a habit to only eat them while facing east. Just for you, buddy.:D
Well, thanks for nuthin'! Why do you do this to me? So, get this; I'll be in Silverdale at the end of this month, but won't be able to do anything outside of the meeting while I'm there.
