Can anyone help.....I have a SeaRay 230 OV, which stalled while in Reverse gear, since then it has been stuck in gear and so I cannot restart the boat. Does anyone have a smart suggestion on how I can fix this???? All ideas welcome:smt001

What engine you have will determine where you Should have posted this. I would guess Merc Sterndrive. But need more details to answer the question, please

Correct, it's a 5.7L Mercruiser Alpha I Sterndrive, 210hp. Thanks :)

Not knowing the whole story behind this as to what led up to the engine stalling (like did the engine really stall or did the outdrive sieze up) it makes it hard to say.

If someone brought me a boat and left me the information that you did I would pull the outdrive and see if the shift lever on the helm moved then.

If it didn't move then you know the problem is forward of the stern drive.

If it did move I would then try shifting the shift shaft coupler on the outdrive and see if it moves. If it does then i would check the shift shaft roller and lever for binding or see it you can determine if possibly the parts were wore and they had jammed. If it shift shaft coupler doesnt move then i would say its time to take the sterndrive unit to a shop.

Thats how I would start anyway.

Mine got stuck in forward last month, but was only couple hundred yds from marina. Coasted into dock and had service look it over. Not sure what caused it but my upper gear set destroyed itself. Hope this is not the case for you. Cost me 2700 bucks.

Well I managed to restart the boat after much checking all connections and drove away from the marina only to have the boat stall again, and no matter what I did it would not restart, but it would turn over and there is plenty of fuel. The wierd thing was that when trying to start it again, if I lifted the red lever on the throttle it instantly stopped turning over.

Another question, it it normal when starting the engine that they is high piched screaching sound almost like an alarm, which stops once the engine if started?

As you may have guessed I've only just got the boat the guy I bought it from was not that technically minded so could not answer any of my questions. Million thanks for the help.

The high pitched squealing sound you mention is probably the low oil pressure alarm. I am not sure what red lever you are talking about on the throttle

i have 1995 250 I had the same problem about a month ago only difference is I shut the engine down in reverse while docking. I had the mechanic check it and the gear cable was getting worn and jamed. he fixed it in about half an hour.Yes that high pitched whine are alarms if they don't stop when the engine is running shut your engine off right away and get your boat checked. Hope this helps.
