My new winter hobby

Nice start Karen and congrats on taking the proper course. Im hoping you will also be carrying in the future. Some models you might want to look at are the springfield XD or XDM models. They all come inn 9, 40 and 45 cal.(Very well built and are easy to shoot) I have the xd 9mm and its awesome. And if you really want to up the anti then get a springfield EMP 9 or 40 cal. Thats a 1911 model with all alum. frame.

Word of advice though.... research research research any model in which you are looking to buy even as going as far as making sure a holster is avail for that particular firearm.

Whoever said a .223 wont go threw walls very well should stand behind that wall and see for themselves the damage it will do as I have personally seen frangible rounds do serious damage to steel plates.

In next weeks newspaper... NJ woman lost her big toe while shooting her new handgun.. . :smt043

Florida has the right idea. With few restrictions anyone can get a permit to carry. No felons being one restriction.
You do not have to retreat. If you are threatened with harm, you can shoot to kill.
That includes any place you are there legally. Not just your home.
All that said, it is a serious thing to have a permit to carry and to do so. You must follow the law or you can be in big trouble.
For example, a concealed permit is exactly that. You cannot let it show even accidentally. You cannot brandish it to settle an argument. And other restrictions. You have to take a course before getting a permit and you learn these things.
All that said, as one person posted, when the chips are down, its better to be judged by a group of 12 than carried by a group of 6.

Thanks Wavedancer! We're going to the range with my brother in law this weekend to have a look at and try out what he owns to get another feel of what's out there.
I'm a girl, I like the cute revolvers with the engraved barrels...but, I know, I have to think with my head, and not how cute the thing is.
NJ is a non carry state, so far...sigh

I was thinking about just that this weekend. It IS a serious thing and something that I am nowhere near ready for. However, if and when the time comes that either NJ changes some laws, or I move...it could very well happen....I just don't see it in the near future for me. I need to be confident just handling the thing first!

Thank you all for your input, it means a lot to me, except Wayne's of course lol..

Karen, Go ahead and get familiar with firearms. Do a lot of target practice, have some fun. You may get to where you are comfortable handling guns and enjoy shooting targets. Just because you like that part doesn't mean carrying one around on you must be found appealing. That may never be for you, if not, so what.

You know the ad stuff here has to be monitoring thread content somehow. I read this thread and there is an ad with pics of handguns and something about a Concealed Carry report that show on the side. I don't think I like that.

It's happening with Facebook too. I was chatting about books and sidebar ads about Kindles popped up....

I like the circuit judge! Hadn't seen that before. What caliber?

Sorry im late to the party here. The circuit judge is the rifle version of the tarus judge pistol which can fire either. 410 shot shells or. 45 acp. The cylinder is longer to accomadate the. 410 shot

I shot anything from. 22 to. 308 myself as well. As well as 10, 12, 20, 410 shotguns.

Best thing is to learn not only your state laws but if there are any local ordinances either.

Otherwise get to a shooting range start with a .22 to practice acquiring sight and than trigger pull. Than once your comfortable with that move up to larger round.

For home defense i use a .22 (laugh if you want) enough velocity to go through one layer of bone.

In NC, You do not have to retreat to use deadly force.

If a person is in your home without your permission, you can "ASSUME" they are there to do harm. You also only need to feel fear for your life to use deadly force, however, you can only use the force necessary to remedy the situation harmless. There is a excessive or unnecessary force component to shooting your assailant. Meaning, if you "unload" the magazine into somebody you will probably be in trouble because you were not in control of yourself. I don't know how I feel about that.

If you feel like a person is going to car jack you, no questions asked you can shoot them thru the glass. That kinda scares me too.

In NC you can shoot someone, for someone, by using "their" threat of deadly force for them. Meaning if you witness someone causing another harm, you can shoot someone if you feel the one is going to kill the other. Confusing huh. I don't like this, if you walk up on an attack, how do you know whom the attacker or the attackee is?
You can also get your use of deadly force BACK! Meaning if you start a fight, but then retreat, and the person you were beating pulled a weapon, you can shoot them before they you, if your fast enough! I know, getting crazy huh.

There's more but I don't remember everything they taught me. haha BTW, I am a Conceal Weapon Permit holder, and just did the class in january, AFTER the new laws took effect.

My carry weapon is a Sig Saur P238 (380) or Walther PPKs 380 and sometimes a 40 S&W.
My home defense weapon is a mossburg 500 pump 12 ga 18" barrell, with hand grip stock.
Boat defense weapon is a Taurus Judge, 45cal long colt and/or 410-000 buck.
Reach out and get ya, 308 weatherby mag, with Lupold 4-9x50 scope and stock mount bi pod.
