My new winter hobby

My daily carry is the Glock 19 9 mm. I have a mossburg 12 gage and an AR15 for home defense. The AR is perfect for home defense as the .223 round will not penetrate most walls it will do the job on the bad guy. Try the Glock if you do not like it go for the ruger LCR 38

spfortjohn... I do a lot of shooting, many training schools, shoot IPSC , 3-gun, etc. You must have very thick solid concrete walls to not be able to shoot through with a .223! .223 rouds can and will penetrate 3/8 mild steel targets at close range 20 yards or less with no trouble. SS109 rounds (green tip) ARE armour piercing. They are also sold on the cheap to individuals at cheaper that dirt, CDDN investments and others. I would not trust an AR in a house where I may shoot through to a child or wife.

Steel core will penetrate but standard lead core will tumble and fragment after about 2 layers of Sheetrock. Try it My 9mm will go through the entire hose. No problem we have a plan if the intrusion alarm goes off at night. I know where everyone will be.

Same can be said for .357... goes through multiple walls. IMHO, the best home defense weapon is a short barrel 12 gauge with 00 buck.

I have quite a few of guns from .22 to .308. In the house since all my walls are asbestos shingles, wood, and dry wall, the only gun I would pull out is my Beretta Model 70s .380. It is a 9mm short, at close range has enough penetrating power for an attacker. Here in CT it is easier to get a carry concealed weapons permit which I have had for 39 years. Just remember, if you pull a gun, shoot until the gun is empty before you call the cops. Dead men cannot dispute if you retreated first. Just make sure they are in far enough that you can say you retreated and they kept on coming. I much rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6!

That 00 buck will go through walls also. With a shotgun I'd use 6 or 7 birdshot and even that will penetrate interior walls sometimes. Miss your intruder at 10-15' and you've essentially got a couple inch in diameter slug that still retains nearly all it's energy hitting the wall.

Inch in diameter? Not sure what you are referring to. 00 buck is 0.33" in diameter.

At close range, yes, just about any 12 gauge load will blast through dry wall. Bird-shot at 15 feet... NOT.

410 with bird shot for inside protection. Most intruders will take a hike even if you miss with the bird shot. Nothing like the sound of an un-choked shot gun at close range to get your attention.

A 410 revolver is a great close range hand gun.

Flat nosed 22 mags will destroy a lot of flesh at close range but you better be a pretty good shot. An ill placed round will only pi$$ the intruder off.

My dad always said: "nothing will stop a criminal in his tracks like the sound of racking a shell into a shotgun"

What I meant was that at typical indoor distances the shot spread is minimal.
Here are some birdshot examples, all penetrating 9' to 30'.

Quite an interesting thread. I can only decipher half of what has been said LOL

My intention is to NOT have to use it unless absolutely necessary and if that ever happens, I don't give a crap if I shoot a window out in the process as long as I come out alive. As I said earlier, I've only shot 1x in my entire life and that was on Saturday.
I do appreciate all of the feedback though, thanks guys....keep it coming!

Did your dad do action films in Hollywood?:smt043

Yep... I posted that same sentiment here some time ago and was chastised by someone here (GFC?).

I have learned (and am still learning) that you have to be careful about the subjects you post here! Great site though... a bunch of knowledgeable boaters!

I wouldn't want to argue the point much, however a .223 lead core copper jacket (as they all are) WILL go directly through several sheetrock insulated walls. btw guys, if you do have the unfortunate situation of having to use justifiable deadly force to protect youself and your property, I agree 100% with the statement unload entire high capacity feeding device (politically correct name for magazine/clip). When the POPO asked you why your shot your assailant 29 times state to the that 30 rounds was to many and 28 rounds wasn't enough! The next words fromn your mouth should be "I will happily cooperate and answer any questions as soon as I hacve consulted with my attorney". Remember you are now the one who may have committed a crime.

Actually I like this answer... "Because that's all the rounds the gun could hold!"

On the subject of .223 penetration. At the bottom of this first page you'll see a test of a .223 frangible round. Even it this time penetrated 8 sheets of 5/8" sheetrock, that's 4 walls. Obviously, all walls aren't of just sheetrock, many many variables that would affect penetration...the shot being at an angle/deflection vs straight on like in this you tube video being one. Lots to think about isn't there.

00 buck will spread 1" for every yard traveled.
]It might and it might not. Again too many variables. Your choosen load, from your gun, may do this but it might not from mine. Here's some more pics. There are less than 2" spreads here at 4yds but shouldn't they be 4"?. You'll see the majority of 20yd spreads 9-13" but shouldn't they be at least 20"? http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot20.htm There is only one way to know and that is to take the loads and gun to be used and pattern it.
