A customer stopped in with his boat to our service department stating that he couldn't get it into forward or reverse. He could move the throttle/shift handle at the helm, but the boat wouldn't go anywhere.

I wonder if this could explain the problem...

Moral of the story... ALWAYS make sure your drive has gear lube in it!!!

Very smooth. Any idea how many hours were on this drive? Looks like the upper end of a Maintenance Free Alpha.

Also, do you know if he lost a seal or if was it simply not keeping an eye on the drive resevoir (assuming he has one)? ......or a combination of both? The u-joint appears to be in good shape - no signs of water intrusion.

I stripped my spline on my 250's fly wheel, and had not forward and reverse... A fishing line around the prop was a contributing factor... Covered under my passport warentee...

I don't know the exact year (but it is pre-reservoir bottle) or the cause - I just snapped that pic when the technician called me over saying "Hey, look at this, you'll like this":smt001

He did say there was no water in it.

However, I doubt it was any of the seals or the fill/vent washers as it would be hard to believe that that wouldn't cause any water intrusion. What we do know is that the customer did his own winterization and oil changes......

Searide - you're right. For anyone that's having a hard time picturing where these things are located (Alpha drive), they are directly under your top cap (flat cap on the top of the drive held on with with 4 bolts). If you took it off, you'd see the smaller gear set staring at you, although it is mounted vertically as it starts the journey down to the prop shaft.

The new gears are already on - we left the old ones near their new counterpart so you could see the difference.

Just an FYI...a few years ago mine was covered by insurance.
