my boat

Bill,
I just wanted to commend you on what I think is a great idea. You & your wife will be able to fully enjoy the ride. You'll be comfortable, on your boat, while someone else does most of the thinking, watching & worrying. Obviously, you will be able to learn some too.

Remember though.....It is a date & her birthday, don't spend all your time at the helm learning!

Again, great idea.

Thanks.....I'll remember.....

Bill,

I was thinking along the same lines as Brian and was going to suggest MM or SS3. Perhaps you should talk to them about upcoming classes. I saw few posted on MM site for docking, anchoring, navigation and others. Those are FREE classes. Also, maybe it's better to spend few hundred for personal training session with one of the captains from those shops. If you were on NJ side I would be happy to help.

Thank You Alex.......I'm reaching out to join those classes, I hope to do better this season.....:smt001

Going into my second season of first time boating, i must say our first year was to learn learn learn, well we did learn some, and need to learn lots more. Navigation, the waterways and to run at night, but this season i'd like
sit back at least a few times, relax and hire a captain for a few hours to take my wife and i to a nice docking restaurant at night, familiar with the local water here and enjoy...

How does one go about hiring someone with the right qualifications etc??

If you have a Marine Max near you check with them. Their employees who move the big boats are licensed captains and are allowed to do private charters outside of work.

Once you find a caption I suggest you head over to Ocean Beach. Plenty of places to eat and drink and a short walk over to the ocean. Definitely on of my favorit places.

Can you list some places that you recommend visiting (I'm planning to do few trip to that area as well)?

Ocean Beach is great because everything is close together. I recommend Maguires for dinner. Make a reservation if you can so you can get a table outside on the deck which is right on the Great South Bay. Docking may be a little tricky. There is a town dock that fills up fast. Otherwise some of the restaurants have docks. We docked and ate at Matthews a couple of times which is OK. You can use the dock fee towards dinner. Overall there is a ton of info if you google Ocean Beach, NY.

I my opinion "man up" take your wife to the resturant yourself, she would respect that more. I couldn't sit back and let some one else drive my boat. Hey it might not go as smooth as with a captain but she will aprreciate your efforts. If not go to panera and pick her favorite sandwich and have a picknick while watching the sun set. Lay out on your bow and watch the stars. I know you can handle this. Much more romantic and show's her you are the boss. :)
