Hey,
Has anyone replaced their OEM gauges with multifunction gauges?
I have a 2000 290 Amberjack. It has 13 gauges on the dash. Later versions only have 5 because they use multifunction gauges (oil, temp, fuel and volts) I know I will need to customize the dash, but I'm wondering if the gauges will be an easy connection by just running the right wires to the right portion of the gauge, or if there is something else involve that I need to consider. Any Mechanics out there that can help me??

Thanks
Jae

Your gauges are analog. The newer gauges are digital. Whether you can convert your boat to Smartcraft, Mercury’s digital CANBuss implementation depends on whether your engines were built with the capability. The technology was just emerging in the recreational marine world in 2000. Sea Ray did not implement it until later (2004-5) because some engine models did not support the technology until then. But, some boats were built with engines that had the capability before then.

If you want to upgrade, the first step is to find out if your engines by contacting Merc with your engine serial numbers. If they are compatible the upgrade is a project, but is a diy. I did it on our 02 280, and others have done it to their Sea Rays as well.

I replaced my 1998 Teleflex gauges with a couple of Faria quad gauges 12 years ago. Easy enough to hook up.
I'm using a lot of NMEA 2000 data on Multi function gauges, phones and tablets now.
Know what you have first. Post your engine serial numbers, or get with Merc.

Thanks Henry,
I didnt know any of that. I will look into my engines and see if this is a viable project or not.. Thanks again
