I want to mount a Magma grill on a pedestal on the swim platform of the boat. Was wondering if those of you who have done this if you put a backing plate on the underside of the platform, or did you just through bolt the mounting base without a backing plate. I do not know if one is needed but thought I would see what others had done. Thanks.

Do a quick search and you should find Nehlannia's (Todd) post....I believe he used one

I did not use a backing plate. I don't think it's necessary unless you plan on travelling through rough waters with the grill up.

If my memory is correct Todd used fender washers on the underside of his grille base.

Yes, I didn't think it was necessary to make a backing plate. I did use stainless steel fender washers, nuts and screws.

I did, however, make one (actually my machinist friend waterjetted one for me) for the cockpit table base.

What are pictures three and four of? i ask because the first photo does not show any 2 inch opening through the platform.

Was it all fiberglass you drilled through or was there some type of membrane between the fiber glass on the swim platform. Basically whether you needed to epoxy the holes after drilling.

Thanks all, I was just not sure about needing a backing plate. Todd I wish I could put the mount where you did but the wife doesn not want it there and have the ladder blocked. Seems like a good place to put it to me, but she puts up with me and the boat anyway, so I will put it elsewhere on the platform as she requests.

If the admiral doesn't want the ladder blocked, put it on the opposite side of the platform. People can enter/exit the water w/o interrupting your cooking.

Just a thought.

My transom door is on the starboard side. My Swim ladder is on the port side.
I like it how it's set up. Once I take it down it's completely hidden. We don't swim and grill at the same time. It's easy to take off and put away anyway.

The ladder is dead center on the platform, I am going to mount it on the side opposite of the transom door. That way she and who ever can get in and out while I cook and everyone will be happy. I really do like the install under the ladder door however as it is out of sight when not in use. I will just be happy to be grilling on the boat again. I had a 15 year old grill that was a horror, so I just gave up on grilling for the last few years. We will see how the new one does. I read the thread about the Newport, both good and bad. It was on sale and arrived for Fathers Day as a gift from the wife.

I have mine on the platform without a backing plate. I mounted close to the starboard side as my swim ladder is in the middle. Didn't want anyone using the post as a handle to come up the ladder and wanted to keep the hot grill away so the ladder could be used while grilling.

How does the grill mount to the upper end of the pole, bascilaly can whn estll use th egrill as a table mount or does a pole mount bracket now have to be unscrewed to use on a table.

A picture of the pole mount connected to a Magma grill would sure be nice to see? Unfortunately I cannot find one on line to look at.

Thanks
