Sorry I am unable to post a photo. The "Iowa" is moving from Benecia to Richmond for a refit before it travels to a permanent home in L.A. We saw it as it passed under the Richmond San Rafel bridge.

It is BIG. I sailed by the Battleship New Jersey many years ago when it was on active duty and that was even bigger. I think they removed some towers from the Iowa.

When you see a battleship you understand what "projection of power" means on a gut level.

I used to see the New Jersey in action. When the New Jersey was providing shore bombardment she was about 15 miles from us and we could feel the percusion on our bodies when she was firing her 16 inchers. WOOOW It probably took a minute before we could hear the blast. We could see the flash and fire and about a minute later hear it.

We drive by the battleship New Jersey all the time. An awesome sight. It is moored on the Delaware River directly across from my marina in Philadelphia. It is now part of the waterfront museum, along with several other historical ships, including the Olympia, the last surviving ship from the Great White Fleet.
