Well I guess the inevitable finally happened. Yesterday my starboard engine detonated, connecting rod through the block. My question is how much of a job to repower it with 4.3's instead of the 470 4cylinder? I know the 4's are ticking time bombs and my thought is at this point might be wise to change it over. Any thoughts or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Greg

My only question would be mounts and whether the stringers are positioned right for 4.3's. IMO, if you do go that route I'd get the 225hp 4.3's. You may need to change drive gear ratios going from the 165 to a 4.3.

My concern is the same about the mounts. My mechanic said he is not sure until he looks at it which will be next week. Anyone out there know if this switch is possible with the mounts. Thanks

Not a thing, temp was 145, oil pressure was around 50. Was running at 3500 rpm's with 4 people and 1/4 tank fuel and then pop pop pop. Shut it down as fast as I could and limped back to marina on the port motor. Really sucks too, both motors were rebuilt 2 years before I bought it and had less than 20 hours after the rebuild. I've only put about 20 hours on them myself.

My 87 has OMC 4.3s, Id assume the 4.3 would work fine in your boat since we have the same boat. Happy to send you pics if you need to see anything specific like stringers or bilge pics.

Man that does suck...out loud...twice!
If you love the boat and plan to keep it, think how nice brand new power will be..

I just did mine and haven't even launched yet.

Be sure to check your power ball tickets.

Good luck,

Mark.

Are you sure you have 470's? looking at your profile says twin 165's. 470 i4, 165 i6.
