Hi All
I heard rumors that the bay channel was dredged. Any anyone give some first hand local knowledge?
Thanks
Ed

The latest seems to be that dredging of the eastern shoal is scheduled to begin May 15 and conclude by June 19. I also understand that dredging of the western shoal is expected to take place in the fall or later. But let's not talk about the fall just yet!

Thanks Red Stripe
Just to clarify, do you mean in the bay in the east west channel or the inlet?
thanks

Thanks
I was able to find some of the info from the Army Corps. The big improvement will be the eastern shoal. That dog leg north is crazy. Heading out to greenport for the 4th, looks like that MIGHT be clear.

Thanks for the info here. Heading to west hampton for the 4th, lets keep our fingers crossed that its all clear! This will be my first trip with the higher draft so looks like I will be running the tide.

Have not been through, but did speak to Coast Guard (as well as SeaTow) yesterday as I am running west to east on Friday morning. The latest is as follows:
1. The dredging project is now on hold until the fall due to ecological requirements
2. The channel they are dredging is the original "east / west" channel (not the one that heads north towards harts cove)
3. Currently, it is that north dogleg that is 'in play' - they have not moved the buoys, and the only marked channel is the one from the past few years. Seems they will finish dredging in fall and then move buoys.
4. Sea tow said the following changes from last year - red 18 and 20 have been moved closer together and slightly further North - so be sure to pick them up by sight and update your GPS coordinates.
5. Green 27 (which is the northern most green in the dog leg) - last year SeaTow recomended not going towards the green and just running the reds 26 to 28. Now they say they recomend going towards the green - not a necessity but say you will pick up around 6" of water if you do so.

So what does all this mean - for me, I will be coming off plane completely at red 24 and going through slow first time through! I know someone who is heading through on Thursday so if I hear anything different I will post. Good luck!

I spoke to the Boat us Capt. in the area yesterday and he gave me the same info.. He did say to skip #27 and line up stern to 26 and bow to 28 and run them down. I will be running it on sat at 1.5 hours after low...I will take it slow and remark on gps. From what I hear the dredge is still in the area, but not in play. Does anyone have a screen shot of the area with the bouys marked??

Brian,
That is exactly what I have as well. Have you (or did you last year) go to the Green 27? This is my first time running with the deeper draft boat - last year Frank at WHB reccomended not heading to G27 (as did SeaTow), but now sea tow said if you head towards G27 you can pick up 6" - have you heard anything like that? I am running it a full high tide so I hope it doesnt matter but in that area you cant be too sure!

Russ

I usually go through this area on plane as the boat drops a foot further into the water at idle. As I remember it last year, I tried to head to 27 but there was no way for me to hit that bouy and turn fast enough to stay in the channel so I sort of headed for it but just really turned to split the distance between 26 and 27. At high tide I saw nothing less than 3 1/2 foot under the boat. I wouldn't go through there at anything other than high tide to 1/2 hour after high tide at the USCG station. I don't go through there until the 3rd week of July this year. Let me know how you make out.

Thanks Brian - I remember thinking the same thing re: making that turn due to the position of the G27 and think that I did the same thing as you - I was fine but the 42da that followed me through dropped down off plane as he had readings of 1.5 below the boat, never tapped however. I am hitting it at dead high tide on Friday so I will post on my return the readings. Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Hope all had a great weekend. Just an update on the moriches situation - we made it through without problem both ways BUT a few updates from the prior posts:
1. Ran through with a 420 DA both ways at full HIGH TIDE
2. VERY low from Red 18 - Red 20 (these are very close together and further north than last year as per the above post) - I draw 40" and at a crawl I had 2.1 feet under boat for around 3 boat lengths, but never kicked up anything
3. IGNORE SEA TOW ADVICE - on way east on Friday (again high tide) I went (at a crawl luckily) to the Green 27, when got within 100 yards from it starting kicking up mud with 1.6 feet under boat, immediately headed back towards Red 28 and picked up to around 3 feet. Today coming back, ignored the Green 27 and went 28 to 26 (both red) and in the area in by the green 27 had around 2.4 feet for a small time and other than that never dropped below 3.4.
CONCLUSION: Depending on draft, only hit it at high tide, and kiss those buoys!! As long as you know where to look the channel was VERY WELL MARKED. Again, we backed down in the above areas only and other than that it was a piece of cake.

Thanks for the update Russ. I agree, I only do Moriches Bay at high tide though I prefer to do it on plane (I do get a sick feeling in my stomach every time I think about it).

Brain,
From now on, as long as I know I am on the high tide, i think I will do it on plane as well as I know exactly where I need to be. Being the first run through with the "new to me" boat, I was definitely leaning towards the cautious side. Good luck running through!

Do you guys know the coordinate numbers for Buoys 18, 26 and 28 are in Moriches?

Are these still valid?
R 26 - 40' 47.298N
072' 44.304W
G 27 - 40' 47.639N
072' 44.147W
R 28 - 40' 47.789N
072' 43. 836W
G 29 - 40' 47 634N
072' 43, 239W

These are the coordinates from last year:

G29 40 47.636N x 72 43.259W
R28 40 47.764N x 72 43.803W
G27 40 47.807N x 72 43.836W
R26 40 47.295N x 72 44.314W

Russ and I used these a few weeks ago and they are accurate except for G27, but as stated above, ignore and go right from R26 to R28.

Also - Our GPS shows Red25 which is wrong.

In my opinion The g19 Dogleg is more to watch for - very skinny water, even at high tide. Good luck.
