No boat....no engines
So I changed the fuel pump on my 6.5 QS Gennie and now it runs great. BUT....when I put the normal house load on it all is well but if I put the air conditioner load on, the genny rpms lug way dow and sometimes comes back up and sometimes the genny dies. It never did this before.

Anyone have a suggestion?

I think I am going to get an offer on the boat this week and I would like to address this ASAP.

Thanks,
Shawn

you should first determine if this is an engine performance problem or governor adjustment.
you should not be doing this without a frequency meter as you run the risk of damaging your generator or appliances.
do you know your air conditioner is okay?
i am a bit reluctant to give much advice without you having a frequency meter involved because no matter what you find the sets frequency will need to be at least checked when this is over.
if you can borrow one or round one up please do so. i have a bit of experience with the quick silver sets. they were pretty good.

I never had any problems with this generator until earlier this year. It would run fine, carry all of the AC load including the air conditioner without a problem. And then one day it quit running and would not restart for about 10 hours. Then it would run fine 1-2 hours and quit again not restarting for several hours. It had spark so I figured it wasn't a sensor but rather a fuel problem. I put a new fuel pump on and all was good. Until last week.

I hardly use the thing but I run it occasionally with a load 'cause that's what everyone says to do. Last week it started fine, ran great with the house load and then when I switched on the air conditioner it lugged dow and then came back up. It only seemed to be a problem with the start up of the air.

So today, based on the earlier suggestion I changed the plugs, it started and ran with no load for about 60 seconds and then quit. It would not restart but had spark. I would think this has to be a fuel problem.

As I said earlier, I am anticipating an offer this week and I was just trying to get a few things taken care of before the survey.

Thanks for the assistance.

I would check the air filter. I had one clogged on a kohler and it did the same thing yours is doing.

I am having the same sort of problem with my 5.0 QS
I ran great last year but this year I have yet to get it to run correctly.

1. Thought it was a fuel pump issue.
2. Replace it and plugs still no fuel.
3. Removed the electric fuel valve between the tank and filter.
4. Got fuel, but it will only start and run for about 10-15 seconds.
5. If I mess with the governor, I can get to run for up to a minute, but not at the RPM's it should.
6. Open to any and all suggestions.

7. Does the Electronic Fuel Valve have to be in place for engine to run correctly?

Just want to get the d**n thing running so I can get it winterized in the next 2-3 weeks!!

Edit: Did check and clean air filter yesterday

Thanks

I would be thinking the anti siphon valve at the fuel tank outlet.

I think my next task is to take a 3 gallon tank dow and connect it directly to the gennie. that will bypas the anti syphon, the fltes, etc. I will also check the air filter.

No problem wih the hijacking. Maybe something will come out of this.

I can't believe you NE guys are already thinking about winter. We were in the high 80's this weekend. Expecting a bit of rain for aouple of days but back to te 80's for the weekend and beyond.

Waiting for PlayDate to respond
He seems to be one of the resident QS experts.
Sent him a PM but he must be out of town.

Oh and 70' this week and weekend here, but marina closes up on Oct 17!

Dan,

I didn't get the PM and I haven't been checking CSR as frequently. Let me read through the message again and see what is going on.

I liked the story better before you changed the plugs. I think you originally hit the nail on the head with the fuel pump. That is a classic example of a fuel pump going bad.

Every generator struggles a bit when the ac is started. Sometimes this is more the ac unit than the generator. If you have the original ac, they tend to draw a lot of amps to get going. The way the QS responds is via a mechanical gov. It pulls hard on the throttle if the engine speed falls off. One thing to check the oil level in the gov. That will help a slow responding gov if everything else is ok.

Now to the current issue. It is possible the new pump failed so you have to get the fuel working. To confirm it is the fuel, give the carb a shot of starting fluid just to make sure that is the issue. If it stays running on starting fluid, check the wiring to the pump and make sure it is working.

Did you change the generator's water separator recently? That usually creates an air bubble that the pump has a hard time overcoming.

Dan,

Your turn. It sounds like air is getting in the fuel line. We need to eliminate that possibility by feeding the pump directly. You need to construct a hose feed to the pump from a gas container. If that works, then it may actually be the pickup in the tank. They have been know to corrode and have holes above the fuel level which introduces air into the system. I'm not sure why the gov trick is keeping it going though....

I believe you are on the right track with the fuel supply.

Thanks John

I will try to figure something out this weekend.
It is going to be in the 70's so I can work on it prior to heading down river for the winter.
