What do you all think about Mooring your boat when at a restaurant or bar? There are a few around here with buoy moors but now with a 37 foot I worry it could come loose.

I used to moor our boat on Martha's Vineyard all the time. You should be fine.

If you get tied up and want to confirm the mooring is not moving:

On your chart plotter, set N up. Zoom in as tight as it will go - 1/16 of a mile or tighter. Turn on tracks.

After a few minutes as the boat is swinging you will start to see an arc form from the track. If the arc is consistent - the mooring is solid. If it is moving any at all you will see it.

Most moorings are plenty heavy to handle your boat. Out here, on the river, we occasionally take a mooring and have never had a problem.

Totally fine. A 37' really isn't so big as to be worrying about a mooring for a quick tie up. If I was leaving it on a mooring full time, I'd want to know what the ground tackle was (or build my own) - but I wouldn't even think twice in using a restaurants or a town's mooring for this purpose. They most likely get MUCH bigger boats mooring there. Besides, it's not like you're going to mooring if there's gale force winds. In most cases that you'd be at the restaurant, you'd be able to just about hold your boat by hand. If you want to be sure, though, call the Harbor Master or the restaurant.

Moorings are a way of life for us here in New England. Until we moved into a marina last year Bella spent all her seasons on a mooring. So some comments.

Keep in mind moorings belong to someone. Make sure if you pick up a mooring it is the right one that either the business establishment, or local municipality have placed for the public. Private moorings should be marked with the owner's name. Not really a hard and fast rule if the mooring field is all private moorings. Mine for example does not have our name on it because it is right behind our house. But I've been sailing Down East where there are harbor areas that are literally private, no anchoring, no mooring etc. When we had our small boats our mooring was sized for them. While we upgraded the ground tackle when we got Bella we kept the old ball, so you can tell the capacity of a mooring from the float. So if at all possible ask first.

Personally I won't pick up an unknown mooring unless I have spoken with the owner or harbormaster first because you never know how well the thing has been maintained. Keep in mind if your boat breaks loose and floats into somebody, you are the one responsible for that damage. You may be able to get reimbursed from the mooring owner, but the blow is going to fall on you first.
