My boat came with a flooded and an AGM battery, the AGM being a larger and the flooded being smaller, both off of the OEM Guest Pro charger. The flooded battery has died, and Im thinking of just replacing it with a regular flooded battery, and using it only for starting. The AGM is larger and would be a house battery only. Someone told me AGM and flooded charge at about the same rate so it wouldnt be a problem, but I dont believe that because the newer chargers have different rates for agm/flooded/gel. So my question is - can I just throw a $120 starting battery in there and use that for a while? I may even leave it off while charging via the charger and just put both on when the boat is running so it would be fine anyways.

So my question - does the increased life of AGM offset the cost of using a smaller $100 battery vs buying a more expensive agm AND a battery charger?

I'm not sure, but I think there may be a compatability issue with your charger and one or the other type batteries. I think the charger will do either AGM or Flooded, not both at the same time. You may want to check the specs on the charger. Other than that, I am a big fan of keeping things the same (both AGM or both Flooded ) and both the same size. Good luck.
