I have two sets of three battery banks on my boat. It's become clear that one set has the stereo and chartplotter on that bank as it dwindles noticeably after listening to the stereo for some time while not running.

Can one mix in a deep cycle type battery with two starter type batteries in the same bank? If so, would this be of benefit?

There is now real benefit to mixing a deed cycle and cranking together. Each will add a slight bump to the others specs, but not worth mixing. If you have a dual bank setup, add a like type to which ever bank needs the boost. If your house bank needs more Ah for play time at anchor, then add a 2nd deep cycle to the house bank. If the engine needs more MCA, then add a 2nd or larger cranking to the cranking bank. Mixing types defeats the purpose of having dual banks.

All chargers specify that multiple batteries should be of same type (and age)... period.

Thanks guys, appreciate the input and will proceed accordingly.

As long as you isolate the batteries while charging, you will be fine. What I do is I have an on/off switch that ties between two batteries (in parallel) and I can turn it off (break the parallel) when I turn on the charger so that each battery is on a separate bank and charges individually.
