Dear Boaters in the Mid West:

Those living in the flood plain need to take some very fast action.

Please others having been through a similar event add on .. with your experience, the things you wish you'd done, the things that really worked.

If your boat is in harms way, you need to think through your plans to protect your investment. Your Insurance company may have advisories for you as well.

Trailed Boats : While you maybe on a trailer in the drive way, high water can sweep your boat away taking trailer with it, Consider tying the trailer and boat firmly in to a unit and then run a stout line from the boat to a highpoint in a tree so the boat can float up yet tend for its self. and not wind up on your or a neighbors roof.

If your boat is kept under a low lying building or shed consider getting it out wher eit can float free as above.

If you are in a marina:

Stationary docks in rivers and lakes that will be over flooded, Raise your dock lines as hi as you can on the pilings without too much slack than you normally would. You do not want to put out too much line which could allow the boat to float over the top of pilings and then be holed, yet you do not want the boat to be tied down so it can not rise up with the flood water. If there any advisories as to local crest height, use that info intelligently.

Floating Docks: The entire dock can take off as a raft (saw this on Lake Grapvine in Texas) if the pilings are not high enough, evaluate where your boat is and the logic of moving it before high water.

On a mooring: Let out more line and provide for an ability for volunteers to add more line from their dingy tie off from a bow cleat with lots of extra line left on deck. A Good Samaritan or local authority might find your vessel tied short and can relieve it for you in your absence.

ALL: Take some very special steps.

Make sure your batteries are topped up to run your pumps. When you last leave your boat, leave ownership info taped to the inside windscreen, and your insurance company details. Turn off everything else, let nothing drag on the batteries except the pumps, You boat may need to fend for itself for weeks before you can get back to it. Leave the boat with canvas on so it will remain as dry as possible. Remove anything of great value inside like those 700 dollar binoculars, that infra red night scope take the goodies to high ground. Remove your shore cables, FW hoses connected to the dock. Take all tools and high dollar spares etc. from the dock box and take to high ground.

Take pictures of all your prep and steps taken to avoid or lessen damage.

Just remember you may not be able to return to your boats present or new location for weeks.:smt100

Good luck my friends,
