Cat 3116 , Recently cleaned out my heat exchangers by removing the supply hose at he inlet and I was able to get out about 2/3 of a impeller worth of blades --- from each engine. Wow !!!! Now I am wondering what's in the oil cooler ! And in the westerbeke 8tbd . Anyone know how to access the oil cooler ? Will I loose the oil if I remove a end cap.,
Also on the generator heat exchanger , when the end clean out cap is removed , will I loose the coolant ?

No coolant to lose on the heat exchanger since it’s a closed circuit. You don’t access the oil cooler as the impeller pieces won’t get past the heat exchanger.

My 3116’s ate an impeller two years ago. I was amazed that the engine still cooled and pushed water with three blades.

My westy has similar issues but will not cool if the impeller is trashed.

there is actually a 2nd hose, off the intake pump that goes to the oil cooler that sits on top of the v drive
