Hi all, I'm new to this forum and also relatively new to owning a boat. My Sea Ray 190 SPX 2018 has some rust marks. The boat is in Hong Kong and is used in open sea. It's stored in a dry dock.

The two questions I have are :
1. Any suggestions on how to clean the rust from fibreglass and chrome? I have used star brite rust stain remover on some of the fibre glass and it comes up fine but not sure for screws in the chrome trim etc.

2. Any suggestions on how best to treat the source of this rust? Is it due to the screws / bolts being used or is is something underlying that the screws / bolts are connected to?

Appreciate any response. Thanks.

A good marine stainless cleaner polish & hard work
The hard work part I'm both happy to do and also quickly learned that it's required !! Would the polish remove it or would that be for prevention after the rust has been removed?

On the metal it does both. For fiberglass you should use the fiberglass rust removers from companies like star brite.

Yeah, I used the star brite on fibreglass and it works great !! I'll look for a similar metal one.

paint some FSR on - let it sit for a few minutes then wash off. Not much work involved. Follow up with some polish.

Zing or an other HCL product would likely make it disappear almost instantly. The quality of the stainless is likely not very good so it will probably come back. You might try some WD40 on it after it is clean and see if that slows down the corrosion.
